The former home of a fantasy kingdom at the heart of a regional SA town is offering prospective buyers a dream investment.

The neighbouring Penola properties at 38 to 40 Riddoch St, which were more commonly known as The Magical and Colourful Kingdom of Penolaraya until a few years ago, have hit the market.

The “one-of-a-kind offering” includes three titles – a one-bedroom cottage, a four-bedroom home and a vacant block on 3040sq m in the town’s centre.

Once a fantasy train showroom and park featuring a collection of themed artwork, sculptures and model railways for more than a decade, the properties have served as a family home for the past three years.

Selling agent Karly Honner, of Thomas DeGaris and Clarkson real estate, said the current owners purchased the properties in December 2020 as a family home.

“So it would be enough room for the family and the grandparents,” she said.

“The family live in the bigger house, the grandparents in the cottage.”

Ms Honner said it was a big job removing all of Penolaraya’s elements but the owners transformed it into a comfortable family home.

“For example, there was a huge pond at the front that they’ve bought a lot of dirt in to fill,” she said.

While they’ve loved the property, Ms Honner said they were selling to relocate to Darwin.

She expected it to attract a lot of interest this time around – especially because they were offering the three properties as a package or the house separately to the cottage and vacant block.

“Interest last time was OK, a lot of people couldn’t see past the fantasy train park because it was a giant job,” she said.

“It’s just the most amazing location in Penola.

“There’s so much you can do with 3000sq m in the city centre.”

The properties are being sold via an expressions of interest campaign, which closes at 4pm on February 29.
