The Castle: Historic LA property home to rock ‘n’ roll royalty hits the market

One of LA’s most historic properties that has been home to multiple rock stars has hit the market for $9.89m (AU$14.7m).

Built in the 1920s, the estate boasts almost two acres of landscaped gardens, and views from Downtown to the ocean.

The home, known locally as “The Castle,” was designed by architect A.F. Leicht, and has a long list of celebrity owners — from Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame, actor John Philip Law, John Getty from the J. Paul Getty oil fortune.

Flea (real name Michael Peter Balzary) was originally born in Melbourne, Australia — and has been the bass guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers since 1983 alongside lead vocalist Anthony Kiedis.

It has also been tenanted by Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, and The Velvet Underground, according to TopTenRealEstateDeals.

With a mixture of Spanish, Art Deco, and Assyrian styles, the home also features Egyptian-themed geometric pillars, arched passageways, gilt ceilings, octagonal-shaped rooms, and a stone staircase that runs from the entry hall to the observatory tower.

Outside the observatory is a roof terrace with views that are some of the best to be found in Los Angeles.

The home itself spans more than 510 sqm, with five bedrooms and a separate studio and guest apartment.

Pastoral and mountain views provide an atmosphere of gentle tranquillity from the home’s many windows.

The most recent rocker-owner, Flea, has owned a number of interesting Southern California properties.

In addition to The Castle, Flea has owned a Richard Neutra seven-sided-futuristic home, a green metal and redwood-trimmed home on LA’s Mulholland Drive, and several homes in Malibu.

Los Feliz has become a hot spot for LA celebrities such as current and former homeowners Katy Perry, Angelina Jolie, Jon Hamm, Colin Farrell, James Cameron, and Kirstie Alley.
