Talking about the idea of ‘rotation’, Dmitry A. Svintsov, co-author of the paper says: “We started with the goal of polarization resolution using 2D photodetectors. However, to resolve linear polarization in the full angular range, we needed to have two identical detectors mutually rotated by 45 degrees. This promoted our thoughts toward ‘rotating’ something in the detector architecture itself.”
