Black and dark greys are often featured inside homes to make certain features pop, but it’s not often you see the shades splashed across a house’s entire facade.

That’s what makes this renovated four-bedroom Nailsworth home at 14a First Ave stand out.

Its bold and edgy exterior extends inside with a black kitchen and darker accents throughout the bathrooms and laundry.

The modernised 1940-built home is attracting househunters in droves ahead of its auction later this month.

Selling agent Daniel Richardson, of Ouwens Casserly Real Estate, said it was unlike any other home in the area – particularly its facade.

“It’s a really bold move and edgy for the area considering the traditional nature of the area,” said Mr Richardson, who is selling the property with Ethan Millen.

“It’s been super popular – the first week we had over 40 inspections.”

“It’s certainly attracting a mixed demographic – there are people looking at it from a downsizing perspective, we’ve had people inspecting with children, definitely young couples probably attracted by the style too.”

The home is on a 494sq m block and is much larger than it appears from the street.

Three bedrooms are at the front of the house, with a short hallway leading to an open kitchen, dining and lounge room that flows onto an outdoor entertainment area.

Beyond the lounge room’s feature barn door is a parents’ retreat with an ensuite and a large walk-in wardrobe.

Owners Rikke Nilsen and Matthew Edwards bought the property in 2020 just before Covid-19 lockdowns began and started renovating straight away.

They chipped away at them for the entire three years they lived in the property and finished just before listing it for sale.

Ms Nilsen said they had never renovated before but were determined to give it a go.

“My dad’s a builder so I’d seen it done before but none of us had actually done it,” she said.

They knocked walls down, added a rear extension and rebuilt many of the rooms all while living in the home.

Ms Nilsen said they used a camping stove for months while they rebuilt the kitchen.

“The kitchen we waited nine months to be completed,” she said.

“We were (using a camp stove) for at least three months but the end results were amazing.”

As for the black facade, Ms Nilsen said it was never planned.

“I saw a Dulux brochure where one of the houses was really dark and I thought, ‘That’s going to look good on that house’,” she said.

“It’s one of those features you become hooked on.”

The property will go to auction at 3pm on August 19 with a price guide of $1.18m.
