An Unley Park home is offering a life of luxury in one of the state’s most prized suburbs, and with a meticulously designed floorplan, it’s ideal for a range of buyers.

Vendors Karen and Craig bought the land at 22 Whistler Ave in 2019 after it had sat on the market for a while.

But where others saw a significant tree on the property as a problem, the couple saw it as an opportunity.

“It’s an Algerian Oak and very old and it’s extraordinarily beautiful and it just meant you had to have a different approach to how you did the footings,” Karen says.

“Because we’d built before on a property with a significant tree, I knew our architect would be able to come up with a solution.

“The house goes around the tree so it was a great footprint to work with the root system, and it gave us the opportunity to design a home with separate wings.

“We have older children so were looking for different zones and we also have ageing parents so we wanted something so that, if required, they could have their own bedroom, living room and bathroom areas, and their own access.

“It’s great for teenagers coming and going, and would be great for older people who maybe need in-home help.

“We wanted to build a multi-function home for lots of different ages.

“It’s definitely a family home.”

In designing their home, Karen says quality was important, and she worked tirelessly to get the look of it just right.

“My husband and I have always loved this Californian dream, Palm Springs-type home, and I spent a lot of time on Pinterest in coming up with the look for the place and it really captured that wonderfully,” she says.

“Every single detail has been thought through, from power points to light points, to lighting – it was a project that I spent months and months on.

“People are stunned when they come here.”

The home has four bedrooms, a home office, a central pool, an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area opening to an alfresco terrace with an outdoor kitchen, and a three-car garage with store room.

“It’s an amazing entertainer and we’ve had school formal drinks here, the girls’ 21sts, parties, pre-drinks – it’s wonderful,” Karen says.

“Plus that pool is beautiful. It’s a freshwater pool so there’s no chlorine or lots of salts or any chemicals.”

The family is now downsizing, with Karen looking to sink her teeth into another project. “We’re excited, but we’re really going to miss it,” she says.
