186 McIlwraith Avenue, Norman Park was nominated as a finalist in the 2018 HIA Custom Home of the Year Awards.

Nicolas and Natalie Humzy-Hancock stumbled upon a one-bedroom cottage at 186 McIlwraith Avenue, Norman Park, owned by a little old lady called Dorothy, whose father had built the home and they were seeking somewhere to build their dream home.“

It’s the second home we built from scratch; we loved the area. This was our dream home, and we’re selling only because I’ve taken a job interstate. My wife and I built this house to last,” Mr Humzy-Hancock said.

A friend of mine from high school is an architect, and she spent the time looking at the property, so we got the best look and feel. It has been designed so you feel like you’re on an acreage. We’re less than 5km from the centre of the Brisbane CBD; we live opposite a park, and there is lots of space everywhere.“

My favourite memory in the home was actually during Covid. The park opposite our house was where everyone gathered with their kids around 4:30pm every day. Now, my wife is in the office one day; I am there two days. We appreciated the large space and light; it was nice being here as a family.”

Mr Humzy-Hancock said both he and his wife, who are renovation lovers, have been surprised by rising building and trade costs that are currently impacting the construction industry.

“When you look at houses built over the last 10-year period, you cannot build them now for what you can buy them for. I’m still stunned at the construction market, and no relief is coming regarding supply. All of the good builders can’t take on more work. We are lucky that when we built the home in 2017, we took the risk and have created equity over time,” he said.

“We recently bought something between 5 and 10 years old in Adelaide and will modernise it. We can’t do what we were doing before. There’s nothing you need to do to the house here, and it’s a good buy. Natalie and I enjoy creating great spaces and places to live.”

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom home was crowned as a finalist in the 2018 HIA Custom Home of the Year Awards ($1-2 million category) with the prestige home built by Lindon Homes and architecturally designed by Amelia Loftus of Loftus Studios.

Property agent Denis Najzar from Place Woolloongabba said buyers were interested in the property.

“Based on the online enquiries, we have seen a suspected busy start to 2024. We’ve seen predominantly families and interstate buyers interested in the property. It is a great location for families with kids,” Mr Najzar said.

“I do feel the Brisbane market will be busy this year. The lack of supply will continue with an influx of buyers entering Brisbane.

“I think the trend of the lack of supply will continue with the builders and trade shortage. I’m identifying that people were looking to renovate or build and abandoning those plans and are looking for a house to move into.”
