This heritage railway cottage is on the market in Alice Springs after a complete makeover by a local artist.

The home at 14 Railway Tce was built in about 1929, when the railway arrived in Alice, and was bought by local artist Lynne Wastell in 2017.

Selling agent Gail Tuxworth, of LJ Hooker Alice Springs, said Ms Wastell completely transformed the original home.

“Lynne has breathed new life into the property,” she said.

“When you walk through the front door, which is original, it feels like you’re in another world, in a bygone era.”

When Ms Wastell purchased the 1300sq m property, it was in desperate need to restoration.

Ms Tuxworth said the talented artist put in a new kitchen, new bathroom, painted and upgraded the plumbing and electrics.

She installed a saltwater pool and had a second dwelling built with double lockup garage, self-contained studio and workshop.

“Lynne even resurrected the citrus trees and the landscaping,” Ms Tuxworth said.

The cottage now has timber floors and airconditioning throughout, three bedrooms, one bathroom and a laundry.

A fireplace is the focal point of the open plan living and dining space while the kitchen has a breakfast bar, farmhouse sink and a huge stand-alone Falcon electric oven with gas burners that sits in the original wood fireplace nook.

The studio has an open plan kitchen and living space, a bedroom and a combined bathroom and laundry.

There is even an old outhouse in the backyard.

“The outback dunny is not flushing at the moment but is in working order,” Ms Tuxworth said.

The property is for sale for $860,000.

Ms Tuxworth said the block was zoned CB (central business) and would be perfect for use as a commercial office, art studio, home business or personal residence.

The property will be open for a special Open Home Soiree and Mertie’s Art House Exhibition from 6-7pm on Friday, October 13.
