The final push for 17 Birch St, Marsden, came down to just two bidders – a father and son duo and a local investor

The humble family home where NRL legend Cameron Smith grew up has sold at auction in Brisbane.

Located in Marsden, the home has been owned by Sonia and Wayne Smith for over 41 years, with Sonia shedding a few tears after the hammer fell at $489,000.

The couple, who were in attendance, declined to comment on the sale, which occurred in from of a crowd of over 40 onlookers.

Marketed by Ray White Marsden – AKG agent Rebecca Cuderman, the three bedroom house sits on a 728sq m block and while “she might need a little love and imagination”, there was no shortage of buyers looking for a renovation project.

There were 18 registered bidders at the auction, but ultimately the grand final came down to just two – a father-and-son duo and an investor, who had brought along his own pint-sized paddle waver.

Bidding started at just $300,000 but quickly went up in $10,000 and $20,000 lots from various bidders until the action slowed at $460,000.

From there it became a “game of tennis”, as Ray White chief auctioneer Gavin Croft took bids of $1000 and then $500 between the final two.

“It is now a two-horse race,” he declared.

But there can only be one winner and this time it was the father-son duo, with the investor still on the lookout for some more fixer-uppers to add to his portfolio.

Ray White Marsden – AKG principal Avi Khan said that Marsden had become the epicentre of the Logan property market.

“It’s located in the middle of the region and surrounded by amenities such as temples, mosques, and other religious centres,” he said.

“The suburb also has an award-winning school that is very desirable for young families.

“This result does not surprise me as buyers are looking for entry level homes.”

There were plenty of family photos throughout the former Smith home at Marsden

Publicly-available property records show the couple bought the Marsden house for $29,170 in February 1981 – a little over two years before their footy prodigy son was born in 1983.

Smith retired from footy in 2021 after a hugely successful career as captain of the Australian team, Melbourne Storm and the Queensland State of Origin side.

He attended Marsden State High in his younger years, with photographs of the veteran hooker and his extended family displayed throughout the Birch St home.

The latest REA Market Trends report shows that the median house price in Marsden is $560,000 – up 25.8 per cent over the year and a staggering 54.7 per cent over the past five years.
