84 Empress Close, Cungulla, is just one street back from the water and has water views

Dreaming of a place by the beach? It may pay to look beyond the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, with an original beach shack selling for a fraction of a house in the southeast.

Located in the quaint fishing village of Cungulla, which is about 45km south of Townsville, the original 1950s shack was listed for $181,000 and is now under contract.

Built in the 1950s, the shack is a bit rough

It has water views and is just one street back from the beach, and has been owned by the one family since it was built, according to the listing by Page & Pearce Real Estate agent Jayne Finlay.

“Fishermen take note. This hut is situated in the popular village of Cungulla where fishing for barra, crabs and flathead is an every day reality,” it says.

“The block boasts extensive sea and parkland views that have to be seen to be believed.”

The retro kitchen

The shack has two bedrooms, a small living and kitchen area, bathroom and laundry.

On an 850sq m block, there is also plenty of room to expand to suit your needs, or add a huge shed to store the water toys.

But listing pictures show it is very much a shack, albeit touches like the leadlight windows at the front suggest it would have been much loved back in its glory days.

Inside is a completely original kitchen with appliances that would not have looked out of place in American sitcom Gidget and linoleum to match.

The main bedroom has a double bed with a mosquito canopy, TV and fan, and walls with no plasterboard.

The master suite?

Another room has a set of bunkbeds and two single beds, a TV and ceiling fan.

The second bedroom

But it has water views and similar style properties on the Gold Coast would easily fetch seven figures.

It was listed for $181,000 and is now under offer.

With a $25,000 deposit, repayments on a loan for the Cungulla beach shack would be around $950 a month.

Meanwhile, the median house price at Russell Island, on Brisbane’s Bay Islands and accessed by ferry, is currently $352,475.

Stapylton on the Gold Coast has a median value of $291,500 but is 40km from Surfers Paradise.

An original 1950s beach shack on a 584sq m block at Bilinga on the Gold Coast sold for $1.015 million in August last year.

And an original 1953-built fibro beach shack on a 911sq m block at Alexandra Headland sold off-market for $6.625 million on June last year.
