Shadow of the Colossus - Bluepoint Games

It seems Sony Japan may have let the cat out of the proverbial bag  when the acquisition of Housemarque was announced they tweeted an image that also showed that Bluepoint Games had also joined the Sony family.

The tweet was, of course, quickly deleted. Bluepoint have been working closely with Sony for a number of years and have created remastered ports of God of War and God of War II for the God of War Collection, The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, the PS Vita version of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Flower, and more recently, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Gravity Rush Remastered, and Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5.

The company was established in 2006 and now has over 90 staff based in Austin, Texas.

Apart from Sony Japan’s faux pas the PlayStation giant has not commented on any other acquisition other than Housemarque, and Bluepoint themselves have been very quiet and have not tweeted since November 2020.

Job listings on their site say they are “developing AAA titles for latest-gen home consoles”, so something for PS5, and interestingly they are also searching for a Senior Level designer. If they were working on yet another remaster then they would not need that job role to be filled, the levels would have been created in whatever game they are remastering so it looks like they are working on something brand new. Another job listing confirms this, stating they are working on “entirely new gameplay systems.”

Assuming the leak is true then Sony are clearly on a spending spree and buying up studios that have a proven track record creating PlayStation games. Bluepoint will join Housemarque, Insomniac, and the recently created Team Asobi studio in Japan. There’s also Jade Raymond’s new studio, Haven, and who knows, maybe Sony have persuaded Kojima to stick with PlayStation for his next game.

In April Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said “We intend to continue investing in partnering with external studios, in addition to aggressively investing in our in-house studios.”
