With the launch of War for Wakanda, Marvel’s Avengers has seen its player count surge over the past week.
The free expansion – which introduces Black Panther as a the ninth playable hero – launched on Tuesday across all platforms.
Last week, Marvel’s Avengers was averaging around 1,000 concurrent players (according to Steam Charts), that number rocketing to almost 5,000 when War for Wakanda dropped. In the last 30 days, the average number of players has almost doubled by 95.89%. It’s worth noting that this figure has been inflated thanks to the recent free weekend earlier this month, clocking over 10,000 concurrent players.
Of course, this doesn’t take into account those who are playing the game on PlayStation and Xbox platforms. Data for these systems is strictly hidden away though it’s easy to imagine the console version seeing a similar uplift as Marvel fans claw to get their hands on Black Panther.
Here’s an overview of the latest free expansion:
About Marvel’s Avengers Expansion: Black Panther – War for Wakanda
The story of the free War for Wakanda expansion revolves around King T’Challa, the Black Panther, devoted protector and current ruler of Wakanda. Blindsided by a betrayal and the resulting tragedy, T’Challa finds it difficult to entrust his duty to anyone else, even his sister Shuri, while also confronting those who wish to do Wakanda harm. When arch-villain Klaw’s forces threaten Wakanda’s safety, T’Challa must take the fight right to them to defend everything and everyone he holds dear.
Players will experience the game’s story and additional missions in the ongoing Avengers Initiative in the lush jungles of Wakanda, an entirely new environment and sole location of the world’s Vibranium. They’ll also get to explore the Royal Palace that overlooks Birnin Zana, known as “The Golden City,” in a new Outpost that contains Shuri’s laboratory, Zawavari’s chambers, and the Wakandan War Room.
War for Wakanda is the third major post-launch expansion for Marvel’s Avengers. Taking AIM dropped at the end of 2021 with Future Imperfect arriving in March 2021, the two operations adding both Kate Bishop and Hawkeye as playable characters.
Next up on the Avengers roadmap is the controversial Spider-Man expansion. The web-slinging superhero will be exclusive to PlayStation versions of the game though it’s unclear how he will slot into the live action title. We’re hoping for even more story content, and hopefully an iconic villain or two to battle against.
