Sniper Elite 4 & Shadow of the Tomb Raider get 4k and 60fps updates for PS5 & Xbox Series X|S

Sniper Elite 4 from Rebellion and Shadow of the Tomb Raider have both been updated to take advantage of the new generation consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. In both cases, the enhanced backward compatibility updates mean the games can now push for 4K resolution and 60fps gameplay.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is bumped up to version 2.01 on PlayStation with the following patch note:

• Support for 4K at high frame rate on PlayStation 5 in high resolution mode

The game is also labelled as being “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” on the Xbox Store. It’s somewhat curious when the game was featured in the bumper crop of 70 more FPS Boost games that were given support a few months ago. At that time, Digital Foundry was able to check and see that Shadow of the Tomb Raider ran at the One X’s 3584×2016 resolution and did so at or very close to 60fps. I’m sure they’ll revisit to see how the PS5 upgrade holds up, and if the patch improves anything on Series X at all.

Another game already with FPS Boost support on Xbox Series X|S was Sniper Elite 4 – in fact, it was one of the first five games to get FPS Boost support. However, Sniper Elite 4 only ever targeted 1080p30 on PS4 and Xbox One, and its PS4 Pro support focussed on 1080p60 support. The game was never enhanced for Xbox One X.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S update is a major step up from that, shooting for ‘up to’ 4K and 60fps on the dramatically more powerful consoles.

It’s the second game that Rebellion has given the new generation update treatment, after similarly giving Zombie Army 4 a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S update in April. While Zombie Army 4 has also kicked off a new season pass of DLC missions since then, there’s no such plans for Sniper Elite 4. Instead, it’s probably nice to have the upgrade for the old game as some people revisit it after the release of Sniper Elite VR.

All in all, a nice pair of surprises from Rebellion and Square Enix as we head into the weekend.
