Introducing the Carbon-bola! – The Carbon Literacy Project

To celebrate the recent launch of the Carbon Literacy Sports Kit, this summer, we’re excited to bring to you the Carbon-bola – our Carbon Literacy Tombola!

The Carbon-bola is a prize draw that you can enter to be in with the chance of winning a bundle of Patagonia goodies to help on your outdoor adventures this summer!

The Carbon-bola will run from Friday 7th July – Monday 7th August, giving you one full month to make your entry into the draw.

Why Patagonia?

As a proud Patagonia grantee, we have chosen to include three Patagonia prizes for the Carbon-bola. Not only is Patagonia one of the world’s leading outdoor clothing brands, it has, for a long time, dedicated itself to taking action on climate change in a magnitude of ways.

Environmental Commitment

Since 1985, Patagonia has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. In 2002, Patagonia created 1% for the Planet and started a global movement to allow members to donate 1% of their sales or salary toward environmental causes. The Carbon Literacy Trust is a proud 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner.

Patagonia also created Patagonia Action Works, an online platform that connects committed individuals to organizations working on environmental issues. Action Works make it possible to discover and connect with environmental action groups and get involved with the work they do.

Additionally, Patagonia made headlines last Autumn, when founder Yvon Chouinard announced in an open letter that he and his family have given the entire company away, committing all profits to the fight against climate change, declaring that ‘Earth is now our only shareholder’. Patagonia set a new example for environmentally responsible corporate leadership, by “turning shareholder capitalism on its head”.

Societal Work

Patagonia share our value that nature is for everyone, and are on a mission to make the outdoors more accessible to all groups. That’s why they are a founding member and supporter of the non-profit initiative, Opening Up The Outdoors (OUTO) – a group that focuses on the continued inclusion, education, and enjoyment of outdoor spaces by people of the global majority. OUTO envision “an outdoor community and industry that is truly diverse, equitable, anti-racist and accessible to everyone”.

Patagonia are committed to protecting worker’s rights, and have expanded their range of Fair Trade clothing. They offer more Fair Trade Certified™ sewn styles than any other apparel brand, and their program has impacted more than 75,000 workers in 10 countries around the globe. A significant element of this scheme is that for every item that carries the Fair Trade Certified sewn label, extra money is directly fed back to factory workers’ communities.

Patagonia rejects the fast fashion business model and instead, creates high-quality, long-lasting products. They offer free repairs for life, so you can enjoy your Patagonia goods, regardless of age, for years to come. Patagonia have also created a trade-in program, Worn Wear, that allows individuals who are ready to let go of their Patagonia items, to trade them in for credit, preventing items from ending up in landfill.

The Carbon Literacy Trust has been a proud recipient of Patagonia’s Environmental Grants since 2016. Over the years, Patagonia has supported us with generous funding and the amplification of our voice, enabling us to expand our reach and work ever closer towards our goal of creating a low-carbon culture. In doing so, Patagonia are a Bronze Carbon Literacy Partner.

Carbon-bola Prizes

How to Enter

To be in with the chance to win, all you have to do is donate to the Carbon-bola via JustGiving.

How many pounds you donate = how many entries you secure to the draw. So, for every £5 donation, you’ll receive 5 entries to the prize draw, £10 for 10 entries, and so on. Entries must be made in whole-pound donations – donations made in smaller denominations (e.g. 25p, 50p) do not equal a ticket entry.

Please remember to include basic contact information, including your name and address/email address, to be eligible for the prize, so that we can contact you if you win!

Carbon-bola Terms and Conditions

Entry Conditions

  • The cost of each ticket into the Carbon-bola is £1. You may purchase more than one ticket.
  • Entries must be made in whole-pound donations. Any donations made in smaller denominations (e.g. 25p, 50p) do not equal a ticket entry.
  • You can only enter the draw by donating through the Carbon-bola page via JustGiving.
  • To be eligible for the prize draw, you must provide basic contact details including name and email address, and enable permission for The Carbon Literacy Project to contact you so that we are able to contact you in the event that you win the prize.
  • Entrants should be 16 and over to comply with Gambling Commission regulations.
  • Entry is open to the United Kingdom & Republic of Ireland.
  • Donations made via other channels (e.g. through Patagonia Action Works) during this period do not apply to this fundraiser. Entries must be via the Carbon-bola campaign page to be eligible for this prize draw.
  • Entries to this fundraiser do not qualify you for entry into future prize draws.
  • Donations made to other fundraisers this year do not qualify you for entry to the Carbon-bola.
  • For fairness, paid members of The Carbon Literacy Project team are ineligible for the prize draw. However, volunteers, interns and friends and family of the team are eligible.
  • No tickets can be sold to, on behalf of, or for a person under the age of 16 years. We reserve the right to carry out age verification checks.
  • Gift Aid will not be applied to entry donations as donations to this prize draw are in exchange for goods.

Closing Date

  • The Carbon-bola will end on 4th August or when we reach £20,000 in donations, whichever comes first.
    Any ticket entries received after the closing date may miss entry into the draw and therefore will be considered as a donation to The Carbon Literacy Project.

The Draw

  • The winner of the draw will be announced by the end of August.
  • The winner will be drawn randomly.
  • The winner of the draw is final.

Payment of Prizes

  • The winner will be contacted directly by The Carbon Literacy Project to confirm the win and the postal address for the prizes.
  • The Prizes will be shipped via DPD as one package.

Unclaimed Prizes

  • If the winner does not claim the prize within 2 weeks, we will re-run the draw to ensure there is a winner in August 2023.
