The Carbon Literacy Project has been named as a Top 10 Northern Gamechanger, at the Northern Gamechangers Awards, for leading the charge on sustainability in the Greater Manchester region and beyond.

In today’s tumultuous world, it can often feel like the bad outweighs the good, and that there is more that divides us than unites us. The Northern Gamechangers Awards aim to shift that view. Hosted by North-West-based business consultancy, Elevate, the awards are an impact-oriented initiative honouring purpose-driven businesses and individuals united in a common aim: to act as a ‘force for good’ across the Greater Manchester region. Unlike traditional award programs, the awards do not have defined categories, allowing for the acknowledgement of exceptional contributions across various sectors and in diverse forms.

Nominations for this year’s awards were sought from a wide spectrum of sectors and job roles, with the independent judging panel responsible for creating a shortlist of the top 50 nominees in July, before ultimately selecting ten Northern Gamechangers. While there are no pre-defined categories, the nominees excelled in various areas, including sustainability, decarbonisation, social mobility, diversity and inclusion, and charitable partnerships.

The awards ceremony was held on 21st September at Revolucion de Cuba in Manchester, during which the Top 10 Northern Gamechangers and the Ultimate Northern Gamechanger for 2023 were revealed. Rather than a bog-standard corporate trophy, the award itself was a commission by local Manchester artist, Caroline Dowsett. The original piece was presented to the Ultimate Northern Gamechanger, while the remaining top ten were presented with limited edition prints.

As a team, we were incredibly proud to be named among the top ten and to be presented with our very own ‘Gamechanger’ award. Carbon Literacy is now being delivered across all seven continents, with over 72,000 individuals certified as Carbon Literate around the world. It is an honour to be recognised for our work, particularly in the region where The Carbon Literacy Project was born, over ten years ago. Indeed, at least 6,000 of those certified thus far have been Manchester citizens.

“It goes without saying that awards aren’t needed to do good. But it’s nevertheless an honour for The Carbon Literacy Project to be recognised as a Top Ten Northern Gamechanger, particularly in the company of the other amazing winners,” said The Carbon Literacy Project’s Director of Advocacy, Phil Korbel.

“Elevate’s vision that categories can divide us, so let’s just have one, for ‘game changing’, is excellent. The networks that flow out of initiatives like this are priceless. We can and should all help each other in creating a better, more inclusive future for everyone.”

Thank you to Elevate and the judges, and of course, congratulations to our fellow winners!
