The Premier League season is drawing to a close. Crucial wins for Burnley, Brighton and Newcastle look to have confirmed their top-flight status next season, with the current bottom three destined for the drop. But at the other end of the table, besides the top spot, everything is still to play for. Hopefully, the following four Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks will perform and push their clubs closer to where they need to be.
Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks
James Maddison (vs Newcastle)
Despite the good form of Kelechi Iheanacho and the constant goal-scoring threat of Jamie Vardy, it is attacking midfielder James Maddison that kickstarts this week’s Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks. The Englishman has great form against Leicester’s opposition this weekend, Newcastle, and should be able to score plenty of points for FPL managers.
Maddison has scored in all of his last three starts against the Magpies, as well as assisting a few in games before. The 24-year-old has failed to sustain much momentum with his form this season, with several minor injuries halting extended runs in the team. However, Brendan Rodgers knows how crucial the playmaker is to his side and whenever Maddison is fit, he plays. With eight goals and five assists to his name in 27 appearances, this season has been Maddison’s best goalscoring season in the Premier League and a few more assists would match his assists record too (7).
Newcastle have somehow survived the drop this year, with loanee Joe Willock scoring several late goals to retain the Tyneside club’s top-flight status. However, up against a Foxes team that are close to securing Champions League football next season, it is a big ask to see Steve Bruce’s men getting a result. With a place in England’s 25-man squad up for grabs, Maddison could flourish in Gameweek 35.
Gareth Bale (vs Leeds)
With Spurs searching for a manager, the outstanding performance of Gareth Bale against Sheffield United will have certainly caught the eye of many. The Welshman scored a hat-trick in a display that showed glimmers of the ability that had Bale labelled as one of the best in the world several seasons ago. This weekend Spurs take on Leeds, a game that is a must-win for the North London side if they are to put the pressure on Liverpool and West Ham for the European spots.
Upon return to Tottenham, expectations were incredibly high for Bale, but then-manager Jose Mourinho never really found a way to weave the forward into his plans until it was too late. However, now interim manager Ryan Mason is at the helm, plenty expect to see Bale playing regularly due to the unlikelihood of a young manager that is keen to impress then resting one of the most talented players available.
Bale has great acceleration, a wand of a left-foot and can link up play well too. On paper, the front three of him, Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son could be one of the best attacks in the league, especially with regular game time together.
Up against a deflated Leeds United team that head into the match on the back of a 2-0 loss to Brighton, Tottenham have a great opportunity to earn all three points. Marcelo Bielsa’s team were poor in Gameweek 34; the usually-excellent Patrick Bamford only managed 12 touches in his entire 60 minutes on the pitch and the Whites’ defence looked like conceding every time the Seagulls attacked. They will need to improve massively and quickly to contain Spurs this weekend.
Edison Cavani (vs Aston Villa)
When Edison Cavani signed for Manchester United, their fanbase was divided. Many knew the striker was great in his prime but plenty feared his career may be coming to a close and he was past his peak. But the Uruguayan has certainly shown that he is still as good as ever, being the final piece to the puzzle that was United’s attack. This weekend the Red Devils travel to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa, a match that if won would all but definitely secure them second place in the league this season.
Cavani has scored eight goals in 22 appearances this season, making his biggest mark on the European scene where he has scored three and assisted two in just two games. The towering forward has tied the United team together in the final third due to his versatility in how he can hold the ball up and bring wingers Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood into play but also get in behind and create passing lanes for Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba. The former PSG man is a typical poacher in the sense that he is always in the right place at the right man, but his power and height allows him to play as a target man too.
Villa have struggled recently, winning just three games in their last 12 matches. Going forward they have simply been quite unlucky, but defensively they have been very poor, with silly mistakes costing them important points. The centre-back partnership of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa will need to be at their very best in Gameweek 35 to withstand the relentless pressure of United’s attacks.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (vs West Brom)
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta seems torn on who makes up his attack. With plenty of players returning from injury and others putting in performances that just about warrant consideration, the Spaniard has lots of options. However, after a Man of the Match display against Newcastle last Sunday, it would be a shock not to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang keep his spot in the starting eleven.
The Gabonese forward has failed to hit the numbers he has in his previous season, scoring 22 goals in both 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns, grabbing just 10 this season. The 31-year-old looked out of confidence in front of goal for the early parts of the season, with his usually-high standard link-up with teammates falling well below par too. But last weekend Auba was his old self; his runs were sharp and intelligent, he looked desperate to get on the scoresheet and the passion and desire looked to have returned.
This weekend the Gunners take on West Brom in a match that could seal the Baggies’ fate of playing Championship football next season, which has looked inevitable for a long while. The Hawthorns outfit have leaked goals all season long and never really truly looked capable of surviving, much to the disapproval of manager Sam Allardyce. West Brom have conceded six goals in their last three games, and if that form continues then Aubameyang is a smart Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks selection.
