Baldur’s Gate 3 has tons of possibilities open to players, but one is a bit more confusing. Can you become a vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Baldur’s Gate has near-endless possibilities for where players can take their campaigns. You’re free to follow any area of the game’s world that you are interested in, but what if you want to become a creature of the night? Eventually in BG3, you’re likely to run into BG3 vampires, or at least creatures which have some kind of vampire-like powers. So, can you become a vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3?

One of the most appealing aspects of the game is how much freedom you get for your characters. You can try to match up the best race and class in Baldur’s Gate 3 or go with a very specialized build, but there isn’t a vampire trait that you can assign. While the game does feature other races that have some vampire aspects, how can you become a fully-fledged one? Pretty early in the game, you’ll run into a vampire spawn. However, he can’t fully turn you into one. Although, you can get pretty close and at least get the good powers of a vampire in BG3.

If you’re looking to transform into a Vampire, this is how you can do it. It’s not quite becoming a full Vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3, but you can get some of the better qualities of the monsters in the game.

Can You Become a Vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3?

If you’re wondering if you can become a Vampire in BG3, you can’t. At least not permanently. One character can turn you into a vampire, but it’s only temporary. On top of that, you can get the powers from a potion too. However, you can’t permanently make yourself into a Vampire.

Meeting a Vampire in BG3

If you’re still fresh to Baldur’s Gate as a beginner, you might have already run into a Vampire! Asterion will meet you pretty early on, a Vampire Spawn. He’s a character with the powers of a Vampire but with some clear drawbacks.

He’s basically a slave to the vampire who turned him into one. This is something that often pops up with Vampires and is part of DnD rulebooks in some places. He can bite you, but he won’t turn you into a full vampire. That whole slave to the vampire who turned you thing makes it difficult, he’s just a Vampire Spawn, not a full vampire. However, you can gain some of the powers this way. There’s also a better method though. By using a potion, you can become a vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3 without any of the drawbacks.

How to Get Vampire Powers in Baldur’s Gate 3

Once you get to Druid Grove, you can find a character called Auntie Ethal. She can cure your tadpole problem, giving you a spot on the map to meet her. Once you get there, you’ll then have to fight as a Fey boss. This isn’t too tricky, only level 5. If you do get into trouble though you can always lean back on resurrecting characters in Baldur’s Gate 3. Once she’s dead, you can loot a potion from here called A Mother’s Loathing that’ll help you get the powers of a vampire in BG3. You can find it by heading to her house and robbing her workshop.

Once you get this potion, you’ll be able to take it to get access to a special ability, bite. This lets you bite characters and reclaim health. It deals 24 damage and restores just as much to you! This is essentially the best part of being a Vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3 and it’s the easier way to get the powers. You’ll only gain them until the next long rest, but you’ll have the abilities without having to go through everything with a party member to do so.

Should You Let Astarion Bite You?

That’s one way to become a vampire. The first time you have Astarion in your party though they’ll be another option at least it seems like there is. On the first night, he’ll try to suck your blood.

You’ll wake up during the attempt but you do have the opportunity to let him do it. If you go ahead with this, he gets a Happy buff which can help things out. You’ll also develop your relationship with Astarion this way, which can be great if you‘re looking towards him for Baldur’s Gate 3 romance. However, you will need to stop him before he kills you. Astarion isn’t big on restraint. Either way, you won’t permanently become a Vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3.

That’s how the biting works but should you let him feed off of you? If you’re looking to keep him in your party and develop the relationship then there’s little harm. However, if you’re not focused on Astarion then you probably should just get him to knock it off to prevent an accidental killing. There is a slight upside to letting him do it if you want a brief experience of being a Vampire in BG3.

Getting Vampire Bite Ability

If you let him draw blood, you will temporarily turn into a vampire of sorts. You’ll have access to Vampire Bite as an action which lets you draw health through drinking blood. However, this isn’t a permanent option to become a Vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3.

This is a temporary power which only gives you the bite for a short time. There is a good reason why he can’t turn you into a vampire permanently though. He’s just a Vampire Spawn. He needs to drink the blood of the Vampire who turned him to become the fully-fledged vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3, which he can’t do at the moment. This means he can’t turn you even if he wanted to.

That does mean that becoming a vampire isn’t possible, at least permanently. However, you can get the Vampire bite ability temporarily and use the same Bite ability after you grab a potion.

What Can Vampires Do in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Vampires in BG3 primarily have one extra power, Bite. That’s the aforementioned ability to attack with a bite that draws health from enemies and gives it to you. This can be useful and fun if you’re especially into role-playing as a vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3. It isn’t an essential part of most players’ tool kit though. Being a Vampire doesn’t get extra bonuses. It’s not like finding the best weapons in BG3, it won’t enhance all of your stats or anything.

Ultimately, if you want to make use of the Vampire powers in the game it’s basically down to personal preference. It’s nice to have an attack with can draw health off of other players. Although, it isn’t something that you massively miss out on by skipping.
