LoL Worlds 2023 Format has officially revealed, but how will the best players of the world decide the fate of the Summoner’s Cup?

The 2023 League of Legends World Championship is less than a month away! After all of the regional league’s have concluded, the only thing that remains for this year in terms of professional League of Legends is the most important event of the year, the World Championship. We looked at all the venues that the players will visit – but how will the teams play the matches that will decide their fates for 2023?

LoL Worlds 2023 Format

Worlds 2023 Worlds Qualifying Series

On October 9th, before Worlds truly starts, the 4th seed of the North American LCS and the EMEA region’s LEC will play a “warmup” match – if you can call the series deciding if you’ll go to Worlds or not a warmup. Golden Guardians and Team BDS will clash in the first Worlds Qualifying Series at LoL Park, Seoul. This part of Worlds will only be a regular Bo5, but it’s one of the matches with the highest stakes.

Worlds 2023 Play-In

On October 10th, after the last participant of the World Championship is revealed, it’s time for the greatest event to start! First, the 8 Play-In teams will face off against each other:

  • PCS: PSG Talon and CTBC Flying Oyster
  • VCS: GAM Esports and Team Whales
  • LJL: DetonatioN FocusMe
  • LLA: Movistar R7
  • CBLOL: LOUD
  • WQS: BDS/GG

These 8 teams have been divided into 2 double elimination groups, where they will play Best-of-3 matches to decide who will qualify for the knockout stage:

  • Group A
    • LOUD vs GAM
    • Movistar R7 vs PSG Talon
  • Group B
    • WQS winner vs Team Whales
    • DFM vs CFO

Afterwards, the 4 best teams will clash in the Play-In Knockout Stage in Best-of-5’s to decide which two teams will advance to the Main Event

Worlds 2023 Main Event

After the Play-Ins, the Main Event will start on October 19th with the two best Play-In teams and the 14 teams that got directly into this part of Worlds:

  • LCK: Gen.G, T1, KT Rolster and Dplus KIA
  • LPL: JD Gaming, Bilibili Gaming, LNG Esports and Weibo Gaming
  • LEC: G2 Esports, Fnatic and MAD Lions
  • LCS: NRG, Cloud9 and Team Liquid

The teams will start off with the Swiss Stage:

  • At this stage, teams will play Bo1’s until they either get 3 wins and qualify for the next segment; or 3 losses and they get eliminated,
  • Teams will be facing teams with the same record in each round,
  • There will be 5 rounds, and while almost all the matches are Bo1’s, the Elimination and Qualification matches will be Bo3!

Only 8 teams are able to get into the Knockout Stage, which is the most similar part of this year’s Worlds to the previous ones:

  • The best teams of the Main Event will face each other in a single elimination bracket in Best-of-Five matches, with the winners proceeding to the next round.
  • After the Quarters and the Semis, only 2 teams will remain, who will play in the Sky Dome of Seoul to determine the victor of the 2023 World Championship!
