The story

Blippar has launched a new toolkit to empower augmented reality (AR) creators to build their own immersive webAR experiences from the ground up using HTML and Java coding—a move welcomed by long-time client OnePlus.

The WebAR Software Development Kit (SDK) is entirely free to use, create, and publish from during its beta phase, with users also able to access full 24/7 support from the Blippar team to help develop their creative campaigns.

It also includes Blippar’s most advanced implementation of simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) to date, boasting 99% accuracy on tracking when locked, with less than a 1% margin of error in angular accuracy, according to the London, UK and New York, USA-based company.

With SLAM, AR developers and creatives can build much more interactive, immersive, and realistic AR experiences by using the device camera to create a mesh of the user’s surroundings that includes floors, walls, ceilings, and other objects.

This allows Blippar’s SDK to track the user’s environment and make everything in it an interactive element, as well as locking AR elements in place relative to the environment.

In an exclusive interview for the latest issue of VRWorldTech Magazine, Blippar chief product officer Ambarish Mitra said webAR creation needed to “be very easy” for the medium to reach its full potential, which is why the company is aiming to take it out of the hands of experts and deliver tools that will enable anyone to become creators.

Blippar chief executive officer Faisal Galaria comments: “We believe the world is a better place with more creators. Blippar is focused on making AR widely accessible, and putting the most powerful AR creation tools in the hands of brands, agencies, and developers.”

“With our new WebAR SDK we’re enabling creatives and developers to build and publish their own WebAR experiences from scratch, anchored with our most advanced SLAM technology to date. Not only have we made WebAR SDK easy to use, but we’ve made the pricing intuitive and accessible. We’re excited to see how our users push the boundaries of AR even further.”

Promising full 24/7 support from the Blippar team will be crucial to achieving these aims. Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer OnePlus turned to Blippar Studio, which works with enterprise clients on specific AR projects, last year for the launch of the OnePlus Nord smartphone.

The project was so successful that it attracted 670,000 concurrent users, a cumulative total of five million users, and a repeat customer in OnePlus for Blippar, which completed its work for the company in just 80 days. Watch a video of the project below.

Mitra told VRWorldTech Magazine that Blippar Studio tends to attract clients who can afford and are able to use Blippbuilder, but use the studio for education.

Mitra said: “The studio is the best way for us to work with them, using our experience and expertise. Our clients can easily develop this content themselves, but they want to see AR at its best and understand our experience and data. And they want to have the highest impact.”

This is the role Blippar is taking right now after closing a $5 million funding round in March: one of pushing webAR forward, as it has done since 2016 when it allowed creators to easily deliver and scale AR experiences through a webpage, or by scanning a QR code, while consulting creators and clients along the way.

Commenting on the launch of the WebAR SDK, Pete Lau, chief executive officer and co-founder of Oneplus, says: “Every brand wants to get closer to their consumers, and AR is the perfect way to do so. Blippar’s new WebAR SDK technology will transform our marketing—we’ll be able to rethink digital marketing, product launches, and the entire purchase experience.”
