Biden Administration Ramping Up Data Exchange Program for U.S. Supply Chains

The Biden Administration is ramping up a program to deal with U.S. supply chain issues by encouraging truckers, retailers, wholesalers, shippers and other businesses to share information. The administration said May 2 that the Freight Logistics Optimization Works (FLOW) program has seen its membership increase from 18 businesses in March 2022 to 53 firms to date. 

According to Reuters, under the Department of Transportation the program will help participants exchange valuable supply-and-demand information with one another, allowing them to better track the movement of goods and products. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg explained that the program will “smooth out supply chains to make us more resilient to whatever it is that is coming next."

Big-name brands already part of the program include Nike, Home Depot, Costco, Target, Walmart, FedEx and UPS.

According to Buttigieg, the Transportation Department originally spent $1.5 million to create the program in 2022. The government agency has requested an additional $5.3 million to keep scaling it and "make it even more useful." Additionally, Buttigieg said, officials will continuously refine the program and seek out feedback from participants to drive improvements.
