An inner-city sports court for impromptu games of basketball, pickleball and handball will soon be nestled into a neglected part of the Brisbane CBD.

The court, which will be free, will be built at the intersection of Roma and Turbot streets, next to the law courts in an area now used for Mirvac parking while others, including motorbike riders and the homeless regularly used the space.

A new sports court will be built between the Heritage Lanes development and the law courts in the Brisbane CBD.

It will feature a shaded, fenced multi-court space for a range of ball sports, as well as seating, a drinking fountain, artworks and landscaping.

It has been approved by Brisbane City Council as an extension to Mirvac’s recently completed Heritage Lanes at 80 Ann Street.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the sports court would bring life to the area.

“Through creative planning, we’re transforming a pretty ordinary-looking space underneath a road overpass into a fantastic sports court,” he said.

“I can see this new urban sports court being really popular, particularly with CBD workers keen to organise a game of basketball during their lunch hour as well as before or after work.

“If successful, this model of using planning outcomes to transform nearby underutilised and unattractive spaces into urban sports courts or other kinds of public spaces could be used at other locations across Brisbane.”
