When I came across this video from the BBC Archives on British engineer Denys Fisher, I knew I had played with a spirograph as a kid. I had no idea it was such an immediate hit back in the 1960s!

As a side note, these BBC Tomorrow’s World features are so well made – the intensity! the suspense! the background music!

After studying the intricate designs of a pound note, Denys Fisher came up with the idea for the legendary pattern-drawing toy, Spirograph. It won the Toy of the Year in 1967 and had sold over 30 million by the time Tomorrow’s World caught up with him in rural Scotland, hard at work on his next creation.
