Where to find the Ice Onion in Pikmin 4

In our new Pikmin 4 guide, we’ll show you where to find the Ice Onion. There are many secrets hidden in each area in the game, including Onions which will allow you to make different types of Pikmin at your ship. 

What are Ice Pikmin?

Ice Pikmin are one of the two new species of Pikmin introduced in Pikmin 4. You can use them to freeze small bodies of water so that your Pikmin can cross over without drowning, and also to freeze enemies and hydro jelly, which will shatter when its health has been depleted. Ice Pikmin are also immune to ice attacks, and can break down ice barriers.

Pikmin 4 Ice Onion location, where to find

You will have encountered Ice Pikmin in some caves during the story, but the only way to encounter them outside of this is to find the Ice Onion so you can make them yourself. There is only one Ice Onion in the game, and it is located in the fourth and final area you’ll go to during the main story, Hero’s Hideaway.

Once you have made it to Hero’s Hideaway, you will first need to pass through the Frozen Inferno cave to make it to where the Ice Onion is. To access this cave you will need to purchase the Scorch Guard upgrade at the lab, which costs 50 materials for your character and 100 materials for Oatchi. Once you have this you will be able to pass through the flames unharmed and enter the cave.

The Frozen Inferno cave has four sub-levels, with a Snowfake Fluttertail boss at the end. It will cloak itself in a cocoon of ice, so you will need to either attack it with Ice Pikmin you find in the cave, or use Red Pikmin to pick up the flaming pinecone to throw to dispel it first, so you can then attack.

Once you have made your way through the cave, you’ll exit just above it on a ledge that you previously couldn’t access. From there head onto the moving platform and onto the smaller ledge, where the Ice Onion sits. You’ll need 30 Pikmin or the equivalent strength for Oatchi to carry it back to your ship. Once you’ve done that, you can create as many Ice Pikmin as you like at any time!
