The all-new 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan that will be sold in Europe.

Volkswagen revealed the all-new third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan in Germany, which should give some indication of the U.S. version of the next-generation Tiguan, which is based on the long-wheelbase model of the car, which will be coming to the U.S. market in 2024.

The new model is built on Volkswagen’s MQB Evo platform, wearing couture reminiscent of the Volkswagen ID.4, particularly in its grille and LED lighting. But its overall shape will look familiar, albeit one with more muscular haunches and 20-inch wheels. Volkswagen says the slippery new shape reduces the Tiguan’s drag coefficient to 0.28 from the current model’s 0.33.

The current U.S. Tiguan is about 6 inches longer than the one sold in Germany. The new European short-wheelbase Tiguan is 1.3 inches longer than before, coming in at 179.2 inches long, 76.3 inches wide, 64.6 inches tall and riding on a 105.5-inch wheelbase.

More than new clothes

The Tiguan’s all-new instrument panel.

Along with a fresh wardrobe comes a fresh cabin, with an instrument panel featuring a digital instrument cluster and head-up displayand centered around an enormous 15-inch infotainment screen with new graphics. There’s a distinct lack of physical buttons, as many of them have seen their function move onscreen. However, there is a rotary dial that controls vehicle’s driving mode, radio volume and lighting color. Other tech features include a wireless device charger and USB-C port.

But it seems that Volkswagen designers maximized cabin space by moving the transmission shifter to the steering column. Massaging seats are a new option.

Many powertrains

Although it is unknown which drivelines will be available in America, the automaker will offer both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants.

The Tiguan boasts a thoroughly modern cabin.

In Europe, Volkswagen offers a mild-hybrid has model with a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a 1.5liter gas engine, as well as a conventional 2.0-liter gas engine with either 201 horsepower or 262 hp, as well as a turbodiesel with 148 hp or 190 hp.

There are also two plug-in hybrid models, one rated at 201 horsepower, the other 268 horsepower and powered by 19.7 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion batteries. Each has a 62-mile battery-electric range, after which it becomes a conventional gas-electric hybrid. Thoughtfully, it can be recharged using a DC fast charger as well as its 11-kW AC charger. Recharge times were not revealed.

But the new model should handle better than the old one, as it’s now fitted with an adaptable chassis, electronic differential locking, and optional two-valve shock absorbers among its notable features.

The new Tiguan will reach European showrooms early next year, with the long wheelbase model due in the U.S. come time after that. Pricing was not disclosed.
