UPS, Teamsters Open High-Stakes U.S. Labor Talks

United Parcel Service and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union on May 8 started the next phase of their U.S. private sector labor contract talks covering roughly 340,000 U.S. drivers, package handlers and loaders at the global delivery firm, reports Reuters. 

The Teamsters union wants an agreement that shares billions of dollars in UPS pandemic profit with workers, exerts leverage over other negotiations and helps to recruit new members — including Amazon.com Inc. warehouse workers. 

In April, the Teamsters said they would refuse to negotiate until UPS signed regional supplement contracts with the union. But, to date, two regional supplemental agreements remain unresolved, according to World Socialist Web Site. 

The two outstanding supplemental agreements are for the Local 89 Air Rider in Louisville, Kentucky, where the company’s massive Worldport air hub is located, and in Sacramento and Northern California. Local 89, significantly, is the former local of current General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman.
