[StarlingX] includes all the components one would need for their edge computing use case….With the flexibilities included in the platform, the deployment options for many vertical markets are limitless.

StarlingX — the open source edge computing and IoT cloud platform optimized for low-latency and high-performance applications — is turning 5 this year. To recognize this milestone, the StarlingX open source community is celebrating by showcasing recent enhancements to the Kubernetes and OpenStack-based platform; use cases across mission-critical industries such as automotive, medical, industrial and telecommunications; and new contributors and supporting organizations.

*News Highlights*

  • StarlingX taps LOKI to simplify deploying and operating distributed infrastructure on a massive scale.
  • StarlingX use cases continue to expand across industries.
  • Encora joins as OpenInfra Foundation Silver Member and StarlingX contributor.

*StarlingX Utilizes ‘LOKI’ to Deliver Flexible and Highly Scalable Cloud Infrastructure*

StarlingX employs Linux, OpenStack and Kubernetes Infrastructure (“LOKI”) and other open source components to create a full-featured cloud infrastructure solution. The platform provides everything needed to deploy a large data center or an end-to-end distributed cloud infrastructure with sites consisting of a few servers to thousands of them. StarlingX utilizes Kubernetes to run OpenStack and other infrastructure services in containers for increased flexibility and robustness.

The StarlingX community prioritizes new Kubernetes features and enhancements to deliver crucial functionality in the areas of automation and orchestration. In the most recent releases, for example, the community upgraded to newer versions of Kubernetes, incorporated Istio service mesh for Kubernetes orchestration, added support for Kubernetes Custom Configuration and the Bond CNI plugin, and more. For more information about the roles Kubernetes plays in powering StarlingX, see the StarlingX Project Overview.

*StarlingX Expanded Use Cases*
The StarlingX project launched in 2018 with initial code contributed by Wind River and Intel. In the past five years, StarlingX has been adopted by large telecom operators to power their network infrastructure and 5G deployments. Well-known users of the software in production include T-Systems, Verizon and Vodafone.

As telecom adoption continues, StarlingX is also finding a niche in powering a wide range of distributed cloud applications. Offering high-bandwidth, low-latency connections on distributed devices at all times, StarlingX provides an easy-to-manage, scalable distributed cloud solution for industrial IoT, video delivery, healthcare imaging and diagnostics, retail, and many other ultra-low latency use cases. While these characteristics are crucial for virtual and Open RAN deployments, they also make StarlingX the ideal platform for innovations like autonomous vehicles, smart cities, augmented reality, drone delivery, and remote healthcare to become reality.

*Wind River to Showcase Distributed Cloud Use Cases of StarlingX at OpenInfra Summit*

Paul Miller, chief technology officer at Wind River, will present the Headline Sponsor keynote presentation at the OpenInfra Summit in Vancouver on June 13.

“StarlingX has reached a remarkable milestone in the advancement of cloud technologies for mission critical industries,” said Paul Miller, chief technology officer, Wind River. “The community has welcomed tremendous growth in commercial adoption and investments across markets by major organizations and contributors. As an ongoing supporter and original contributor to the code base, we are committed to continuing our collaboration and delivering distributed cloud expertise by drawing from our technologies such as Wind River Studio, as well as collaboration with key initiatives such as O-RAN. Congratulations on the 5th anniversary of StarlingX.”

Additional StarlingX sessions and workshops at the OpenInfra Summit include:

  • StarlingX: Next generation security with Zero Trust architecture.
  • StarlingX at scale – Infrastructure management of 10s of 1000s of geographically distributed clouds.
  • StarlingX Hands-on Workshop.
  • Using enclave technology to help secure secrets in a distributed world.
  • A private 5G campus network enabled and powered by OpenStack and StarlingX.

*Encora Joins OpenInfra Foundation as Silver Member Extending Support for StarlingX*

Encora—an innovation partner to some of the world’s leading technology companies providing next-gen services in areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, IoT and more—has joined the Open Infrastructure Foundation (OpenInfra Foundation) as a Silver Member to contribute its support to the StarlingX community. Encora is committed to contributing upstream to StarlingX and is dedicating five developers to participate in the project. The company has a deep understanding of the open source space and the importance of getting involved in the communities it cares about. Encora is focusing its initial efforts on improving the project’s documentation and will take on more tasks to enhance and improve the platform as it moves forward with its StarlingX journey.

“We are honored to be part of the OpenInfra Foundation,” said Augusto Cavalcanti, president Americas Brazil Division at Encora. “Encora recognizes the importance of open source technology in driving innovation and collaboration within the tech community, and we’re committed to playing an active role in its advancement. Through our contributions of code and resources to StarlingX, an open source Edge Cloud Computing Architecture, we’re helping create a more robust, flexible and efficient infrastructure for edge computing that will be beneficial across many industries. We support open source product adoption and will work with our partners and clients to incorporate technologies like StarlingX into their own operations.”

As a new participant in the StarlingX upstream community, Encora joins numerous other actively contributing organizations including WindRiver, Intel, 99Cloud, Marvell and OptimCloud. The StarlingX community is actively collaborating with several other groups such as the OpenInfra Edge Computing Group, ONAP, the O-RAN Software Community (SC), Akraino and more.

*Additional Community Accolades for StarlingX*
“Congratulations on the 5th anniversary of StarlingX this year! As one of the leading contributors of StarlingX, 99Cloud is so honored to witness the growth of StarlingX and celebrate this important moment together. We are pleased to see that we are both making big progress and growing better and better. 99Cloud will keep contributing to the community and working with customers as well as partners to support and promote StarlingX.”—Shuquan Huang, 99Cloud Technical Director

“StarlingX allowed us to deliver a global enterprise management system including edge node management for a large, integrated deployment of 40/100Gb switches / 5G backhaul / 80211AX wireless mesh network. The system requires the management of enterprise switches, 5G, 80211AX wireless, IOT sensors and video/audio devices. The project includes all the components one would need for their edge computing use case, and is a highly integrated platform that allows scalability, but also management of the infrastructure globally. With the flexibilities included in the platform, the deployment options for many vertical markets are limitless.” —Scott Kamp, VP Technology, Xunison
