Solar exceeds wind generation and becomes the second largest energy source in Brazil

Yesterday, January 3, 2023, the National Electric Energy Agency of Brazil (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica, ANEEL) informed that the year 2022 will be remembered as a powerful moment for the expansion of the electric matrix in Brazil. In addition to the expansion of 8,235.1 megawatts (MW) being the second largest recorded in the historical series since the foundation of ANEEL, the increase in the supply of energy generated by renewable sources represented about 70% of the total. New wind and solar plants accounted for 2,922.5 MW and 2,677.3 MW respectively.

Also yesterday, the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Associação Brasileira de Energia Solar Fotovoltaica, ABSOLAR) released an infographic on Twitter indicating that photovoltaic solar energy has become the 2nd largest source in the Brazilian electrical matrix with 23,854 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, 11.2% of the Brazilian capacity. Thus, it surpassed wind power (23.8 GW), and remaning second only to hydropower (109.7 GW).

ABSOLAR itself had already reported in the last week of December 2022 that solar energy generation capacity in Brazil had grown by more than 60% in 2022. Click here for our posts about solar power.
