Solana Goes Mobile With The Saga Phone

In June 2022 Solana Mobile, a subsidiary of Solana Labs, introduced the Solana Saga phone, a flagship Android mobile phone that integrates Solana blockchain and other crypto technology. The Solana Saga phone extends the Web3 ecosystem to a mobile platform. Saga will streamline crypto keys security and management of digital assets such as tokens and NFTs.

“Almost 7 billion people use smartphones around the world and more than 100 million people hold digital assets – and both of those numbers will continue to grow. The Saga phone sets a new standard for the web3 experience on mobile.”

The Saga phone is designed and manufactured by OSOM, an Android development company that provides end-to-end solutions for hardware, software, and connectivity. OSOM founders have backgrounds at other large technology companies including Google, Apple, and Intel.

Pre-orders for Saga phone require a $100 fully refundable deposit payable by Credit Card or USDC (crypto). The total cost is expected to be about $1,000, and the remaining balance is paid prior to delivery. Solana will prioritize Saga phone shipments for developers first so they can test the Solana Mobile Stack and Saga phone. The phone is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2023. Those who pre-order may be eligible to receive a Solana Saga Pass, an NFT accompanying the first wave of Saga devices.

The Solana Saga phone is step toward merging the Web3 world and mobile devices. Solana’s Solana Mobile Stack will run native on the Solana Saga phone. Solana Mobile Stack is open-source and includes three primary components:

  • Mobile Wallet Adapter: The wallet adapter connects Android apps to Solana wallets such as Avana Wallet.
  • Seed Vault: Separates wallet seed phrases and passwords from apps operating on the phone. This feature provides an extra layer of security compared to most mobile phones today.
  • Solana Pay: An open-source blockchain payments framework.

Solana is the first blockchain to develop a mobile hardware device. Anatoly Yakovenko, one of Solana’s co-founders, previously worked at Qualcomm and has a background in telecommunications.

Solana Saga Phone Specifications

The Solana Saga phone includes a 6.7″ OLED display, 12 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, and the latest flagship Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform. The Solana Saga phone will feature Solana Mobile Stack’s Seed Vault (see Github). The Seed Vault keeps private keys, seed phrases and secrets separated from the application layer. This design provides a much more secure environment for managing crypto accounts than most mobile phones today.

The Solana Saga phone is a re-brand of OSOM’s OV1. The OSOM OV1 was scheduled to be released at the end of 2022. The OSOM OV1 is meant to compete directly with Apple, Google, and Samsung mobile phones. The OSOM OV1 design features a stainless steel and titanium housing, a ceramic back, Corning Victus cover glass, and a Qualcomm processor. The OSOM OV1 is noticeably bigger than the prior Essential Phone that featured razor-thin bezels and a 5.7-inch screen. The OV1 features two rear cameras with 48 and 12 megapixels, and a front camera with 16 megapixels. The OV1 features a USB-C cable to connect, which can support up to 625mb/second.

Decentralized Mobile App Store

Solana’s Saga phone may provide a decentralized alternative to centralized app stores. Many developers refer to the centralized app stores as walled gardens, which means that Apple and Google have final say on the content and apps available to consumers. Solana Saga phone may enable a truly decentralized mobile app store, which means that any app developer can publish and distribute their apps without a centralized authority.

New smart contract standards, such as xNFTs, will likely enhance the Solana Saga phone experience. Solana Smart contracts could be designed to interact with mobile apps on Saga devices.
