Smart Roasting: IoT Brews up a Roast

The taste of coffee depends largely on the degree of roasting, a field in which a lot of experience is needed. To quickly and reproducibly determine the degree of roasting, Zach Halvorson, founder of the one-man company Espresso Visionhas developed a small device that determines and displays the degree of roasting. span class=”wtxt”>Smart Roasting

Devices for this purpose otherwise easily cost 1000 euros. By combining 3D printing and using Maker hardware and prototyping boards for microcontrollers, sensors and displays, he has developed a device that is listed at $299. The Roast Vision consists of a case with a USB-C port for power. On the top is a small OLED display and a measurement window. If you fill a measuring spoon of coffee into the small measuring stick, the device displays the roasting degree of the coffee in a few seconds. The indication is given in a number (0-35, dark to light) and in words.

The core of the measuring device is the SparkFun Photodetectorwhich uses the MAX30101 sensor to measure the light scattered back at the coffee from the LED built into the sensor. This type of sensor is used, among other things, for particle measurement (smoke, dust, fog), distance measurement and also for measuring blood oxygen saturation in tissue. Zach Halvorson says he is thinking of expanding the functions of Roast Vision into an IoT device.
