Florida-based regional passenger airline, Silver Airways launched a new business venture earlier this week. On Tuesday, November 9th, the regional airline began its first-ever freighter operations in conjunction with Amazon Air. The new cargo operation also represents an exciting new expansion for the airline as the carrier’s operations were previously confined to the U.S. state of Florida and the neighbouring Bahamas.
The regional carrier operates an all-ATR fleet consisting of ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 passenger aircraft and is also well known for its colourful aircraft which are not exactly silver but pink and grey, adorning a white flamingo on a tail.
In order to operate these new services for e-commerce and retail giant Amazon, Silver Airways took delivery of five of its own passenger to cargo converted ATR 72-500F aircraft. With an ex Aurigny Air Services ATR 72 P2F conversion operating Silver Airways first cargo flight for Amazon on the 9th of November, the flight operated between Fort Worth, Texas and Des Moines, Iowa.

<p>The airline will begin operating freighter flights for Amazon Air out of a new base at Fort Worth-Alliance Airport, where Amazon has a large distribution centre. From here, the smaller regional services operated by Silver Airways will feed into Amazon Air’s mainline cargo network which is currently operated by Boeing 737s and Boeing 767s.</p>
<p>The commencement of freighter operations on behalf of Amazon Air comes on the back of an announcement by Silver Airways management earlier this year. At the time senior management at the all-passenger airline stated that it was looking to venture into freighter operations. This announcement was followed up by the delivery of Silver Airways’ first ATR 72-500F freighter aircraft on July 8th, which was painted in Amazon Air’s Prime livery and registered N919AZ. </p>
