The UAE’s Sharjah city has launched a soulbound token for issuing verified digital certificates. The nation’s third-largest unveiled the “Sharjah NFT” at the Sharjah Government Pavilion during GITEX Global 2023.

According to the announcement, “Shajah NFT” is an initiative that leverages NFT technology for government and private entities to store and track documents on the blockchain using a QR code. The initiative is part of Sharjah’s digital transformation campaign as it looks to be among the first cities to embrace emerging technologies.

The platform offers an innovative user-friendly system that enables various entities, including government authorities, educational institutions, private businesses, and event organisers, to issue authenticated certificates as non-fungible codes stored in a digital record.

Sheikh Saud bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Director of Sharjah Digital Office, commented on the announcement on Monday saying: “In light of the rapid advancement of technology in work and life, Sharjah Digital Office remains dedicated to integrating cutting-edge technologies to benefit the community. These efforts are central to the emirate’s digital transformation journey, driven by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.”

According to Sheikh Saud bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Sharjah NFT platform signifies a shift from traditional paper certificates to secure and dependable digital certificates, which are easy to issue and offer a high level of reliability and security.

The platform utilises blockchain technology providing an impervious firewall against any form of tampering or fraud, which ensures the authenticity and credibility of certificates in relation to their legitimate recipient.

The platform allows users to design and generate customised certificates for specific needs. They can also utilise the platform’s blockchain infrastructure to efficiently create certificate records and serve as a central control hub for coordinating their distribution with maximum efficiency and minimal manual involvement, Sharjah City wrote in a statement.
