New details have surfaced relating to the kidnapping of poker player George Janssen, who says he was held in a basement for more than a month.

On December 15, over a month after his disappearance, a family member received a handwritten letter from the four-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit Ring winner.

In the letter, he inquired about the health of friends and family members. However, he mentioned the names of people who don’t exist in his family. These names were Kirby, Iggy, Daisey, Noah, Anthony, and Parker.

Blackmailed by a gang

Last year, the four-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit Ring winner was reported missing by his family on November 13. On December 16, he was discovered zip-tied and covered in blood by the side of the road.

According to reports, the Michigan poker player had flagged down a driver, telling them he’d managed to escape his captors. A missing person’s report states that before his disappearance, Janssen was being extorted by a criminal gang for two years.

The ordeal started when a masked man held a gun to Janssen’s head as he got into his car in a carpark at a Detroit casino. A report states that the man demanded $2m from Janssen, which he said he didn’t have.

Ordered to drive down the road, Janssen met other gang members. He was given a burner phone and over two years, the gang demanded money from him, threatening to harm his family if he didn’t pay up.

On the day of his disappearance, Janssen’s car was abandoned with $50 bills left on the floor.

In the report, Janssen’s finances were being looked at. Before his kidnapping, Janssen had been a successful poker player earning nearly $450,000 in tournament winnings.

Through his car dealership, it’s alleged that Janssen had started taking out loans – which he couldn’t repay – on vehicles to sell. And at the time of his disappearance, he was $2m in debt to his bank.

Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said: “We can’t substantiate whether it did happen or it didn’t happen. But there are a lot of things that need to be looked into.”
