Surf culture and cannabis have gone hand in hand for decades, facing mainstream criticism, negative stereotypes, and even the occasional ban. In recent years, both the herb and the sport have gone the distance and slowly eroded the less-than-favorable connotations they’ve  been associated with. So It’s inevitable that a strain would eventually nod to their illustrious relationship.

We can only assume that the Point Break strain is named after the 1991 surf-action movie of the same name. This multiple award-winning strain is known for energizing highs and calming comedowns, with tropical flavors that make you long for sand and sea. One of its known breeders is the fittingly named Surfr Seeds, while Karma Genetics has developed its own version of the strain. Although the Point Break strain info is limited, let’s unpack what we already know.

Point Break strain genetics

Point Break strain genetics differ quite a bit depending on which breeders version you’ve acquired. The Surfr Seeds variation, High Times’ Strain Of the Day for 4/20 week 2023, combines the sativa-dominant potency of Tropicanna Cookies (Tangie x GSC) and the CBD-heavy Trophy Wife strain. This has become the most recognized version of the strain.  

In contrast, the Karma Genetics version of the strain combines indica-dominant SFV OG Kush, a 2nd generation backcross, with the world-renowned Skunk #1. This winning combination took the gold at the Copa Del Plata Argentina cannabis awards in 2014. Skunk #1 originated in the 70s. Since then, it’s become integral in developing many other available strains today. The SFV (San Fernando Valley) OG kush strain started as a pheno of the original SFV OG but was later bred with the Afghani strain to improve its quality overall.

Is Point Break strain indica or sativa?

The Point Break strain sativa to indica balance will vary slightly depending on which version you find, although both tend to be indica dominant. The Karma genetics version is highly indica-dominant, whereas the Surfr Seeds variety has an average 60:40 indica to sativa ratio.

Growing Point Break strain

Breeding cannabis has become such a lucrative and diverse industry that it’s unsurprising when breeders keep their info top secret. This is the case with Surfr Seeds, as they have kept their breeding process and Point Break strain seeds well under wraps and away from private growers. 

The info we have managed to source is limited and applies to the Karma Genetics version of the strain. We know that the Point Break strain grows with the vigor many have come to expect from hybrid strains. Growing to a medium height, the Point Break cannabis strain responds well to The Sea of Green method and thrives in outdoor and indoor environments. Due to its bold scent throughout the growing process, many cultivators recommend using a carbon filter to keep your growing operations away from nosey noses.   

This strain produces buds that are big, dense, and heart-shaped. They often have a dark, olive green complexion with subtle hints of purple, adding to their overall visual appeal. The buds are coated in thick sticky trichomes and bright orange hairs, inviting you to dive right in; the water’s fine.

Point Break strain flowering time

With multiple versions out there and probably more in the making, it’s getting harder to source original Point Break strain seeds, only adding to this strain’s rarity. And with Surfr Seeds keeping the lid on their plants’ grow info, many growers are left in the dark. As for the Karma Generics version of the strain, the general flowering time is around 8-9 weeks.  

Point Break strain autoflowering time

The autoflowering version of the Point Break marijuana strain, like most autoflowers, starts blooming very early. Because it doesn’t require light deprivation to start flowering, expect the first buds to appear after four to six weeks.  Point Break strain autoflowers can be harvested after ten to fourteen weeks. That makes its (auto)flowering time between four and ten weeks long.

The average yield of any cannabis plant depends on several factors, including the skill of the cultivator, growing conditions, strain genetics, and size and health of the plant. It also differs between photoperiod and autoflower plants. However, you can use general estimates as a potential yield per plant guideline. 

For photoperiod plants, this is 16-64 ounces (450-1814 grams) outdoors and 8-24 ounces (227-680 grams) indoors.
