Ever played Gimmick! Special Edition?

Unless you were in Japan or Scandinavia in the early 1990s, chances are you would have never heard of – let alone played through – Gimmick!. It was an innovative physics-based platformer that was released onto the Famicom and NES at the time. For collectors of retro games, the Japanese cartridge of Gimmick! featured a special SunSoft 5B chip that allowed composer Masashi Kageyama to include a beautiful soundtrack. This version of Gimmick! is one of the rarest and most valuable NES cartridges out there. But enough of the history lesson – Gimmick! Special Edition brings it all into the 21st century with release on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC.

A Groundbreaking Platformer

Gimmick! Special Edition is releasing today onto Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC platforms, and brings the unique platformer to a brand new audience. You’ll be playing as the adorable youkai Yumetaro, capable of summoning his own star. These mystical powers will serve him well in this physics-based playground, as he navigates a number of whimsical levels.

Throughout the run time of Gimmick! Special Edition, you’ll be taken on a joyful adventure across dangerous cliffs, picturesque beaches, and everything in between.

Numerous Modern Updates

As is the case with many retro titles brought kicking and screaming into the modern age, Gimmick! Special Edition introduces a swathe of quality of life features. Developers City Connection have thrown in online leaderboards, to reward the best of Gimmick! players, a new time attack mode, as well as a rewind function, to allow you to replay parts of the game to the best of your ability.

Gimmick! remains one of the most valuable (and rarest) NES™ cartridges ever made. The Scandinavian version was called “Mr. Gimmick”.
