Check out our latest Overwatch 2 guide to help you find your new main in 2023!

If you want to play Overwatch 2, one of the first things you should check is all of the available heroes. Once you go through each one and see what they offer, the subsequent step is to choose which one will be your main. In other words, you must select a hero you’ll focus on playing.

Choosing your Overwatch 2 main is often a lot more complicated than it seems, especially if you do not have a lot of experience. People make tons of mistakes when deciding what to focus on, which is why it is time for this in-depth guide to show you all of the things you must be aware of when it comes down to selecting your main.

Try every hero before deciding what to play

People new to Overwatch 2 usually want someone to tell them which hero to focus on, so they should start playing it. Although this tactic might work in some scenarios, it is much better to play every hero at least once. This will take some time, but it will allow you to learn some information about each hero and how it works.

After you’ve spent some time playing with everything, you can decide which heroes fit your playstyle. Overwatch 2 offers a diverse selection of options, so it all comes down to personal preferences. Some people prefer using swift heroes that deal a lot of damage, whereas others are more interested in tanks.

Tank as a main

Even though there are more than 30 Overwatch 2 heroes, the game divides them into 3 big categories. The first one is called Tank, and it consists of heroes with more HP/Armor whose job is to protect their teammates and do damage.

Contrary to popular belief, the tanks in Overwatch 2 are not training dummies. In fact, their main job is to create as much space as possible by playing aggressively. Doing this forces the enemies to focus on them, which gives their team more space to do damage and land kills.

Having a good tank on your team is extremely important, no matter which map you’re playing on. This is especially true in Overwatch 2 because the changes to the game meant that we only have access to 1 tank instead of 2. In other words, this person’s job is even more important than before.

If you decide to take on the tank role in Overwatch 2, you will be able to carry your team much easier, as long as you are good at it. There are different kinds of tanks to choose from, and Blizzard will add even more characters in the future.

Some tanks excel when being at the frontline, whereas others are more specialized and require you to wait for cooldowns. For example, Roadhog is one of the strongest tanks in terms of HP, but people usually focus on his hook to be successful.

Another thing to remember is that some tanks are more mobile than others. Some heroes also have CCs, something that is extremely useful in Overwatch 2.

DPS as a main

Despite the fact that tanks are trendy in Overwatch 2, most people focus on DPS. In addition to being easier to master, a good DPS can have a tremendous impact on the game and carry his team to victory. Hence, this is one of the best positions when playing alone.

There are all kinds of DPS heroes to pick from, and each one has something that makes him special. Some of them do more damage, others can fly, and there are heroes that can climb walls and other objectives. Needless to say, you have to try each one and decide what works best for you.

Speaking of what works, the DPS heroes can be divided into several groups, depending on how they work. For example, one group consists of “hit scanners”, meaning that these heroes have guns that require your crosshair to be on the target to land your shot. Usually, these heroes are harder to master but can be extremely effective.

There are also DPS heroes that use projectiles. They’re similar to the hitscan in some ways, but the projectiles can be harder to land because players have to predict where the enemy will move to land them. There are several Overwatch 2 DPS projectile heroes, such as Genji and Hanzo.

Spam DPS

Aside from the options mentioned above, Overwatch 2 has a couple of DPS heroes that can be classified as “Spam”. Unlike those mentioned above, they do not require you to hit your shots all the time to be effective. On the contrary, all they need is to spam their abilities.

There are several spam heroes you could focus on, such as Junkrat, Bastion, Pharah, and even Symmetra. Once you decide to play with them, you can spam your regular attack and/or abilities and try to do as much damage as possible.

Support as Main

The third and final role in Overwatch 2 is supported and is something that not everyone is interested in. However, being a good support player in Overwatch 2 can greatly impact your team, especially with some heroes. In other words, don’t think that playing support is not worth it because you can do a lot of things to carry your team.

It is important to know that some supports act mainly as healers, whereas others provide different utilities. So, choosing the best support depends on many things, including the combo you’re using. There are many cases where it is better to have the support that provides utility rather than a heal bot.

Speaking of healing, some supports are better at AoE healing, whereas others focus on a single target. Choosing one over the other depends on different things, so always think carefully before deciding.

Choosing a main in Overwatch 2 is often more complicated than it seems, especially for new players. However, once you spend enough time playing each hero, you can decide which one fits your playstyle and how to utilize it.
