What’s Osiris?

Osiris is a groundbreaking project that brings the first EVM Optimistic Rollup to the Tezos blockchain, enhancing scalability and enabling advanced functionalities like Ethereum smart contracts.

Optimistic Rollups

Optimistic Rollups are Layer 2 scaling solutions that increase transaction throughput while maintaining the security of the underlying blockchain. In a rollup, most computations and state storage are handled off-chain, and only the final state is posted to the main chain.

Tezos’s rollups, including Osiris, benefit from the platform’s regular and successful protocol upgrades, ensuring advanced and efficient blockchain functionality.

Ethereum Smart Contracts on Tezos

Tezos’s advancements, such as Smart Contract Optimistic Rollups (SCORUs), offer Ethereum developers the opportunity to port and deploy their smart contracts on the Tezos blockchain with minimal changes to their existing codebase.

SCORUs like Osiris can emulate the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to use the familiar Solidity language and existing Ethereum development tools. This interoperability reduces entry barriers for Ethereum developers, expanding their potential user base and leveraging Tezos’s advanced capabilities.

Tezos Rollups vs. Existing Ethereum Rollups

Compared to existing Ethereum rollups, Tezos’s rollups emphasize decentralization. Osiris, for example, allows any participant to become a staker on a node and challenges false commitments through a refutation game. This design encourages broad participation, strengthens system security, and mitigates the centralization risks associated with admin keys in other rollups.

The Osiris Security Model

Osiris’s security model includes a refutation market where nodes publish commitments summarizing transactions, which can be challenged if false.

The refutation game involves a dissection mechanism and a final conflict resolution phase, where participants exchange hashes and provide proof to determine the winner. This mechanism adds transparency and verifiability to the process, enhancing security and deterring malicious behavior.

Osiris project represents a new chapter for Tezos

The Osiris project represents a new chapter for Tezos by introducing the first decentralized EVM Optimistic Rollup. With Optimistic Rollups and SCORUs, Tezos can interact with various software systems while maintaining verifiability on its blockchain. Tezos’s flexibility and inclusivity, supporting popular execution environments like EVM, WebAssembly, and Michelson, as well as attracting Rust and C/C++ developers, position it at the forefront of blockchain technology.
