OpenAI admits ChatGPT got lazier

Users of OpenAI’s popular language model ChatGPT have been noticing a decline in its performance, with reports of sluggish responses, incomplete tasks, and overall less helpful behavior. After days of speculation and user-driven reports, OpenAI has finally confirmed these concerns, acknowledging that ChatGPT has indeed become “lazier”.

The confirmation came through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, from the official ChatGPT app account. The post stated, “We’ve heard all your feedback about GPT4 getting lazier! We haven’t updated the model since November 11th, and this certainly isn’t intentional. Model behavior can be unpredictable, and we’re looking into fixing it”.

This admission comes as a relief to many users who have been experiencing frustration with ChatGPT’s performance. Complaints have been surfacing for months, with users reporting that ChatGPT is giving shorter, less informative responses, failing to complete tasks as instructed, and generally appearing less engaged.

Why did ChatGPT suddenly get lazier?

OpenAI hasn’t provided specific details on the cause of this underperformance, but they have acknowledged that it may be related to the last update on November 11th. They further explained that “differences in model behavior can be subtle – only a subset of prompts may be degraded, and it may take a long time for customers and employees to notice and fix these patterns.”

While this is not the first time users have complained about ChatGPT’s performance, it marks a significant shift in OpenAI’s response. Previously, the company had denied reports of ChatGPT becoming “dumber” or less helpful, attributing user concerns to increased familiarity and usage. However, this time, OpenAI has taken full responsibility for the issue and pledged to address it.

What are they doing?

The company is currently working on a fix for the problem, but there is no definitive timeline for when it will be available. In the meantime, users are encouraged to provide feedback on their experiences with ChatGPT, which will help OpenAI diagnose the issue and implement a solution.

This issue only affects ChatGPT, which is powered by the larger GPT-4 language model. Other AI models based on GPT-4, such as Microsoft’s Copilot, may not be experiencing the same performance degradation. However, OpenAI has not provided any specific information on how this issue might impact other models.

For those who are dissatisfied with ChatGPT’s current performance, OpenAI suggests exploring alternative options such as Google’s recently launched Gemini language model. While Gemini is a newer model, it has shown promising results and may be a suitable replacement for users who require a more reliable and consistent AI assistant.
