Benton Harbor City Commissioners have approved a new Class C marijuana growers license for Nobo at 900 Alreco Road. At a Monday meeting, Mayor Marcus Muhammad said the company is looking to expand. This license would be stacked on to its current licenses. Commissioner Juanita Henry questioned the benefits of having Nobo in town.

“They don’t give us any money, other than property tax and income tax,” Henry said. “They don’t even use our water. The whole facility uses Benton Township’s water. So, what do we get?”

Mayor Muhammad said Nobo’s plan and license request have nothing to do with a community benefits package. He said the company uses Benton Township’s water system because that’s what’s connected to the property.

“We can’t force or make anybody in the township, even if it’s a parcel in the city of Benton Harbor, to connect to our water system,” Muhammad said. “Nor can we hold them up or hostage and say if you don’t do this, we’re not going to do that.”

Muhammad said the site on Alreco was vacant for years before Nobo spent millions to turn it into a marijuana grow facility. The commission approved the license with Commissioners Henry and Ethel Clark Griffin voting no.
