MTG Lord of the Rings The Ring Tempts You Mechanic Explained

What would a Magic: The Gathering set about Lord of the Rings be without The One Ring? Wizards of the Coast has already announced an exciting promotion for die-hard collectors and fans, but the set also brings a new, potentially confusing mechanic based on the One to Rule Them All as well. Here's how the Ring's Temptation mechanic works.

Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth is the latest set that's a part of MTG's new Universes Beyond initiative, taking existing properties like Warhammer and Transformers and merging them with Magic gameplay. Tales of Middle Earth puts a new spin on classic characters like Frodo, Bilbo and Gandalf and introduces new flavorful mechanics related to The One Ring, for example.

Some cards from Tales of Middle Earth reference terms like "The Ring tempts you" or "ringbearers." These mechanics are connected. Whenever The Ring tempts a player, that player selects a creature they control to become a ringbearer, or continue to be the ringbearer if they already have one. They may only have one ringbearer at a time. The ringbearer gains a number of abilities based on The Ring emblem. Ringbearers gain additional abilities whenever The Ring tempts their controller. These abilities persist even if The Ring changes hands, with the new ringbearer gaining those same abilities.

It sounds pretty confusing, but WOTC released some graphics (taken from the Magic Wiki) that explain just how the mechanic works for reference in-game.

The Ring looks to be a powerful mechanic - who will you choose to bear The Precious - I mean, The Ring?
