Mini unveiled two new battery electric vehicles, the 2025 Mini Cooper and 2025 Mini Countryman, ahead of the opening of the IAA Mobility auto show, which opens to the public in Munich on Sept. 5. Both vehicles not only share electric drivelines, they also boast a revised appearance.

“Inspired by our history, we have developed our own new design language, defining our DNA. We call it ‘Charismatic Simplicity’. The idea behind it is a design that gives each new Mini model a strong, individual character and is characterized by a clear, reduced design language intuitively focused on the essentials of the brand,” said Oliver Heilmer, head of Mini Design.

While both models look to the original 1959 British-built Mini for inspiration, neither will be built in England. The Cooper is slated for manufacture in China, whereas the Countryman will be built in Germany.

2025 Mini Cooper

The 2025 Mini Cooper SE’s instrument panel drew its design inspiration from the 1959 Mini.

The fifth-generation of the Mini Cooper benefits greatly from the brand’s new design, as the sheetmetal has been smoothed out and simplified, returning to the aesthetics of the original car. The three-door hatchback’s iconic round headlamps bracket a new hexagonal grille. Similarly, rear lighting has been revised.

Inside, the Mini Cooper’s instrument panel was cribbed from the original 1959 Mini. Back then, it sported a center-mounted speedometer and a row of toggle switches below it. Similarly, for 2025, the Cooper has a large round center-mounted OLED touchscreen with toggle switches below it.

The new Mini Cooper rides on an electric chassis created by Spotlight Automotive, a joint venture between BMW and China’s Great Wall. The 54-kWh hour battery in the upper-level Mini Cooper SE produces 218 horsepower, a WLTP-rated 250 miles of range, and a 0-62 mph time of 6.7 seconds, while the 41-kWh hour battery in the base Mini Cooper E produces 184 horsepower and can travel 190 miles.

“With its electric drive and purist design, the new Mini Cooper is a perfect fit for an urban lifestyle,” said Stefanie Wurst, Head of Mini, in a statement.

The 2025 Mini Countryman

Having dropped Cooper from its name, the Countryman’s shorter surname contradicts its growth. At 174.5 inches long, it’s hardly mini, being 4.8 inches longer, 0.9 inches wider, and 3.9 inches taller than before.

But like the Cooper, minimalism is the name of the game here. So it wears a similar face and grille, but the Countryman sports somewhat boxier couture, while inside, you’ll find a similarly minimalist instrument panel design. Notably, the dashboards, steering wheel, vehicle headliner and floor surfaces are manufactured from recycled polyester sourced from plastic bottles and carpet remnants.

The Countryman will be offered in two forms. The Countryman E is fitted with a 150-kW battery pack that produces a WLTP range of 287 miles, while generating 204 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. If you prefer all-wheel drive, then you’ll want the Countryman SE ALL4, with a larger 230-kW battery pack rated at 313 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque that delivers a WLTP range of 269 miles.

Mini didn’t reveal any plans for gas engines, or the 2025 model lineup planned for North America.
