Matter creator CSA announces healthcare working group

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has announced the creation of a working group focused on accelerating the adoption of Matter for healthcare purposes.

Matter was released by the CSA last year with the promise of providing an interoperable standard that will finally unlock the full potential of the smart home.

The CSA’s member list is nearing 600 organisations – including Apple, Google, Amazon, Huawei, Samsung, IKEA, Schneider Electric, Signify, Bosch, Verizon, and Logitech – and Matter continues to go from strength to strength.

Building on its momentum, the CSA has announced the Health and Wellness Working Group. The goal of the group is to align major contributors in the healthcare industry around the Matter standard to ensure secure and interoperable health and wellness devices.

“At the outset, this initiative calls for adding health devices to the smart home ecosystem, enabling a trusted approach for sharing health data, including support for regulatory requirements,” explained the CSA in a blog post.

By 2030, the National Institute for Health says that one in five Americans will be 65 or older. Ageing populations around the world need support to make their later years as comfortable and dignified as possible.

“The Working Group development roadmap will begin with support for ageing-in-place and independent living by utilising valuable data generated from connected smart home devices.

“It will then expand to address a broad set of home health and wellness devices and use cases, like remote patient monitoring, chronic condition management, and acute care in the home.”

IoT devices will be key to ensuring that everyone can live as long and healthy lives as possible. They will also help global healthcare systems manage the pressures of growing and ageing populations.

The CSA is calling on all relevant players – medical device manufacturers, ageing-in-place service providers, healthcare providers, third-party payors, pharmacies, and relevant government regulatory agencies – to become a member and help shape the future of the industry.

“As we all hope to age gracefully with dignity and as much independence as possible, the senior lifestyle you’re transforming could be that of someone you love, or quite possibly, your own.”
