HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), the holding company for shipbuilding under HD Hyundai, has delivered an LNG tanker equipped with an artificial intelligence engineer, which it claims is a first.

HD KSOE announced August 28 it had delivered and set up the AI-based automated engine onboard H-Line Shipping’s 180,000-ton LNG-powered bulk carrier, according to Offshore Energy. The ship was constructed in the South Jeolla Province of South Korea by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.

The AI engineer is equipped with two engine automation systems that operate in real-time to diagnose the condition of important ship equipment and detect potential emergencies.

The AI engineer also includes an Integrated Condition Diagnosis Solution (HiCBM) and an Integrated Safety Control Solution (HiCAMS). HiCBM is a real-time diagnostic system that identifies potential equipment failures. HiCAMS works as a watchdog system that detects and analyzes safety-related events via closed-circuit television (CCTV).

“By being the pioneers in applying the jointly developed engine automation solution, we are poised to become a leading force being the world’s first shipping company to engine automation on our LNG-powered bulker vessels,” said an H-Line Shipping representative.

Previously, HD KSOE became the first company in the world to carry out the autonomous navigation of a large LNG carrier when Avikus (a subsidiary of HD Hyundai) transported the Prism Courage LNG tanker across the Pacific Ocean in June 2022.
