There’s been a pretty controversial tweet over on the official Twitter page for Tower of Fantasy. Tower of Fantasy’s PlayStation version will not have crossplay or cross-progression capabilities.

The Initial News of a PlayStation Version

The announcement for the PlayStation version was first revealed not too long and has been met with plenty of support. With the game’s popularity, it’s no surprise that a console version is in the works – HoYoverse have done it before with Genshin Impact, and they also plan to do it with Honkai Star Rail. Opening up the genre to console players is a smart business move, and can be beneficial overall.

A Bad Decision for Many Reasons

However, Tower of Fantasy’s decision not to include crossplay and cross-progression is heavily criticised. The entire point of Tower of Fantasy is to be an open-world gacha MMO that you can play with friends and people worldwide. By closing off the majority of the game’s players who use the PC client and mobile, those on PlayStations are going to severely miss out on Tower of Fantasy’s potential.

For instance, there’s going to be a significant decrease in the number of players on each server. This could make it difficult to defeat certain bosses and the queues for content may take longer. Additionally, the lack of crossplay means that a lot of people won’t be able to play alongside their friends – which defeats the purpose of an open-world MMO.

Cross-Progression is the Appeal of Many Gacha Games

Not only that but the axing of cross-progression means that mobile users who were planning on eventually moving over to the console version, will not be able to do so now, thus forcing them to continue playing on their devices.

Current Tower of Fantasy players can seamlessly switch between mobile and PC with the implemented cross-progression that is already available for them. But, the same can’t be said for those patiently awaiting the PlayStation release.

This recent news won’t affect players who play on PC, but for those who were actively looking forward to playing on a larger screen rather than their mobile device, it’s incredibly disappointing.

It hasn’t been explained as to why this choice was made, and it’s certainly not going down well amongst the fans. What was once an exciting announcement, has suddenly become quite sour and bittersweet.
