The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) launched its new human trafficking awareness campaign May 31 entitled “Your Roads, Their Freedom.” The initiative will provide the United States’ 8.7 million commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers with the information necessary to identify and report suspected human trafficking activities.

The campaign offers numerous materials related to the topic including human trafficking indicator cards for CMV drivers, awareness posters that will be displayed in rest stops, travel centers, bus stations and other places where human trafficking may take place, and social media content as well as a newsletter that can be featured in both internal and external communications.

“Human trafficking is a heinous crime, and it has no place in the transportation industry,” said FMCSA Administrator Robin Hutcheson. “But the hard-hitting reality is that our nation’s transportation systems are exploited by human traffickers every day, and FMCSA is working to help stop it.”

“Your Roads, Their Freedom” was launched as part of the DOT’s Transportation Leaders Against Human Trafficking (TLAHT) campaign. “Your Roads, Their Freedom” will also build on other national efforts to combat human trafficking, including the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign as well as FMCSA grant programs which have awarded millions of dollars in funding to support state-level counter-trafficking efforts.

An estimated 28 million people around the globe are currently subjected to human trafficking, according to the FMCSA. However, truckers have made over 1,400 calls to the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline between December 2007 and June 2016, helping identify 452 potential human trafficking cases.
