Fantasy Football Players to Add Week 1

Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 1. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)

1. Deon Jackson, RB, Indianapolis Colts

Last season, Jackson got some run after Jonathan Taylor went down with an injury. He had 68 carries for 236 yards and one touchdown. It was his second and most productive season of his NFL career.

Now that Taylor is on the PUP list and out for the first four games of the season, fantasy managers are trying to get shares of the Colts’ backfield. Indianapolis will likely turn to Jackson to start the year, as he is healthy and has some experience. Managers in need of immediate production can add Jackson prior to week 1. He is rostered in 30.7 percent of ESPN leagues.

2. De’Von Achane, RB, Miami Dolphins

Miami has rotated between running backs the last couple of seasons. During the 2023 NFL Draft, they selected De’Von Achane in the third round out of Texas A&M. In 2022 he had 1,102 rushing yards, 196 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns for the Aggies.

His role to start the season was unclear, but is becoming a little more focused. Jeff Wilson Jr. was placed on IR and will miss the first few games of the season. Raheem Mostert will likely start, but Achane will likely see playing time as well. He will have immediate production, but could take over the backfield at some point in the season. Achane is currently rostered in 24.2 percent of ESPN leagues.

3. Evan Hull, RB, Indianapolis Colts

The Colts used a fifth-round pick to add to their running back depth, when they selected Evan Hull. He spent four seasons at Nothwestern, but was specifically productive over the last two seasons. He had 2,417 rushing yards, 851 receiving yards and 22 total touchdowns in his collegiate career.

As mentioned, Jonathan Taylor being on the PUP list gives a lot more available snaps to Colts running backs. Hull impressed in the preseason and could see some work with the chance to take over a larger role. He has the ability to run and catch pretty well too. Hull is rostered in 13.2 percent of ESPN leagues.

4. Zack Moss, RB, Indianapolis Colts

Moss was the lead back when Jonathan Taylor went down with an injury last season. He was traded to the Colts from Buffalo. For Indianapolis Moss had 365 rushing yards and a touchdown, which likely helped a lot of fantasy managers who were dealing with injuries to the running back position late in the season.

On July 31, Moss broke his arm. He was seen without a cast last week, but didn’t return to practice. Moss is on the active roster for the season opener and the Colts will split snaps between the three running backs on this list according to the Indy Star. Moss may offer the least amount of short-term value, as they may lean on the other healthier backs to start the year. Once he gets in a rhythm, he could be the back to roster, as he got more of the work than Jackson last season and Hull was just a fifth-round pick. He is available in over 93 percent of ESPN leagues.

5. Kendre Miller, RB, New Orleans Saints

The Saints were another team that added running back depth in the 2023 NFL Draft. They selected Kendre Miller in the third round out of TCU. He had a fantastic season that helped the Horned Frogs reach the National Championship Game. Miller finished the season with 1,399 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Alvin Kamara is serving a three-game suspension to start the season. Jamaal Williams will likely get most of the workload in his absence, but Miller should still get some touches. He can be added, but it is important to note that his role in the offense likely will only last for a few weeks until Kamara returns. He is rostered in 9.6 percent of ESPN leagues.
