The East Grand Forks council gave final approval last night (Tuesday) to a moratorium banning the sale of cannabis in the city.

Recreational marijuana becomes legal in Minnesota on August 1st. Local governments in Minnesota can temporarily ban sales pending more guidance from the state – including location of retailers.

City Attorney Ron Galstad says right now there are more questions than answers moving forward.  “I’ve even called somebody I know in the AG’s office for clarification.  Nobody at this time is giving any real answers because nobody really seems to know.”

Council member Tim Riopelle says other communities are dealing with the same issues.

Mayor Steve Gander described the moratorium as a “pause for clarity” from the state.

East Grand Forks will seek additional grant funding to help cover rising costs associated with the LaFave Park improvement project.
The Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trail Commission has already agreed to chip in $871,000 dollars towards the plan – with the city picking up 25% of the bill. Under a new grant proposal the city’s share would be 20% on a $2.2 million dollar upgrade.
The council approved the plan last night. The 20% match will cost the city $442,794 dollars.
The deadline to apply for the additional funding is July 31st.
