Edelweiss Airlines is set to modernise its long-haul fleet by acquiring six Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with plans for them to enter service from summer 2025. These new, highly efficient and environmentally friendly planes will replace the existing five Airbus A340-300 long-haul aircraft, restoring Edelweiss’ long-haul fleet to pre-COVID-19 levels by the end of 2026.

The Airbus A350-900 offers greater range compared to the A340-300, enabling direct connections between Switzerland and new holiday destinations in the future. Passengers can look forward to a more comfortable travel experience with the A350-900’s spacious “Airspace” cabin, wide aisles, large baggage racks, and quiet passenger compartment. Improved air quality, larger panoramic windows, and advanced technology for fresh air circulation contribute to enhanced comfort.

The A350-900, previously operated by LATAM Airlines, will initially have 339 seats across Economy, Economy Max (with more legroom and greater recline), and Business Class (convertible to flat beds). All classes will feature advanced in-flight entertainment systems with high-resolution screens and USB power at every seat.

Due to global material shortages and maintenance limitations, the first four aircraft will initially operate with modifications to the cabin while retaining the original configuration. A complete cabin overhaul with new seats and interior design will be carried out later, significantly improving passenger comfort. Edelweiss is investing a substantial amount in this endeavour.

The Airbus A350-900 is recognised for its environmental friendliness and fuel efficiency, consuming 25% less fuel and emitting 25% less CO2 than the A340-300. It also has noise emissions up to 50% lower, making it one of the most eco-friendly long-haul aircraft.

Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer noted that this fleet modernisation is a significant milestone for the airline and will make Edelweiss one of Europe’s operators with the youngest long-haul fleets by 2026. The first A350-900 in Edelweiss livery is expected to arrive in Zurich in the summer of 2025, serving a network of over 20 holiday destinations across the Americas, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Indian Ocean.
