DraftKings Rules Maine’s $37m Sports Betting Debut Month

Maine’s digital sports betting market has enjoyed a solid start, raking in over $37m in handle in its debut month.

DraftKings has left Caesars Sportsbook in the New England dust

While not on the scale of New York or Illinois, which have both broken the $1bn monthly handle mark, figures released by the Maine Gambling Control Unit (MGCU) reveal DraftKings has left Caesars Sportsbook in the New England dust.  

According to the MGCU’s sports wagering report, $30.5m was wagered at DraftKings while only $7m went to Caesars. The latter is likely aggrieved as it appeared it had the lion’s share of the market, having partnered with three of Maine’s tribes – the Penobscot Nation, Maliseets and Mi’kmaq – for the four available digital sports betting skins.

DraftKings made a very late play into the Maine sports betting market, partnering the Passamaquoddy Tribe late October to take the final sports betting skin.

According to the Associated Press, the four tribes received half of the gross receipts of approximately $2.3m while state coffers jingled to the tune of $468,000 in taxes.

Director of the MGCU Milt Champion summed up Maine’s first month from the regulator’s viewpoint by stating Wednesday: “Everybody’s behaving, and it’s really nice.”
