DoNotPay AI lawyer is ready to give $1 million for any case in US

DoNotPay AI lawyer wants to fight corporations, beat bureaucracy, and sue anyone for you! Wait, a robot lawyer? Yes, you heard right. The startup DoNotPay calls itself the “world’s first robot lawyer,” and it wants to use artificial intelligence to represent two defendants in upcoming speeding ticket hearings before judges next month.

DoNotPay AI lawyer: Would you like a robot lawyer to represent you?

It will be the first time that a legal counselor based on artificial intelligence (AI) would perform as a robot lawyer in a real court case. According to reports, an AI company called DoNotPay claims its product can lead a defendant in court via a headset on how to avoid paying the fines and other penalties associated with speeding tickets.

Phones and other electronic gadgets with internet access are typically not allowed in courtrooms in many nations and jurisdictions. Browder said that the corporation is using hearing accessibility guidelines in this court as a backdoor to use Apple AirPods despite the phone ban.

The court will never know

Browder said emphatically, “Definitely not,” when asked if the court would be aware of the AI assistance during the hearing. The speeding ticket hearing will occur in February in a U.S. courthouse. However, to protect the defendant’s privacy, Browder and the corporation declined to offer any other information about the case.

The CEO disclosed that the firm represents another defendant in a U.S.-based traffic ticket case that would be tried via Zoom. Browder called using a synthetic voice “very illegal,” thus, DoNotPay is debating whether to use a teleprompter or not in that situation. Although he could face legal consequences, “at the end of the day, it’s a traffic ticket,” so he isn’t too worried.

However, the law does not prohibit the use of AI-legal support, and Browder does not believe that courts will take a hard stance against defendants who use AI coaching to help them meet deadlines. It’s also “an experiment, and we prefer to take chances,” he said.

1 million dollar reward

DoNotPay, according to Browder, will compensate the two defendants for their participation in the “experiment” by paying any fines that may arise from the two cases and already looking for new ones with a reward.

Since about 80% of low-income individuals can’t afford legal representation, according to the American Bar Association, Browder hopes the experiment loosens court regulations barring the use of AI in court, which he says harms low-income persons.

How does DoNotPay work?

An AirPod or other Bluetooth-enabled hearing equipment will be used in court as part of DoNotPay’s strategy to have the AI robot lawyer whisper instructions to the defendants.

The defense will present its case to the court in person and via Zoom. DoNotPay may also take up a third case involving an eviction.

According to Browder, this is the first time AI has been employed in a legal proceeding. To avoid state bars trying to intervene, DoNotPay keeps the hearing dates and places secret.

What are the risks of the DoNotPay AI lawyer?

Although DoNotPay has committed to pay any fines incurred by being the first to rely on AI in court, Browder insists that the risks involved are worth it because the defendants will be rewarded for their participation in the experiment.

DoNotPay has also taken precautions to prevent its AI from being extremely polite or exaggerating the truth in its responses to the judge, who may make rhetorical statements.

Even though the first AI court cases are scheduled for February, more could be coming. As we mentioned above, DoNotPay would pay anyone with a case before the Supreme Court $1 million to wear AirPods and have a robot lawyer argue the case.

Million dollars question: Can AI really replace lawyers?

Since the release of ChatGPT, heated discussions have been taking place concerning whether or not AI would eventually replace human professionals such as content creators, programmers, and even legal professionals. In a paper titled “GPT Takes the Bar Exam,” the authors detail an experimental evaluation of GPT-3.5’s performance on the US bar exam’s multiple multistate choices (MBE) components.

Researchers conclude, “While our capacity to interpret these results is constrained by emerging scientific understanding of LLMs and the private nature of GPT,” LLMs are likely to pass the Multistate Bar Examination’s Multistate Performance Test (MBT) in the near future.

But Allen & Korkowski & Associates associate attorney Matthew Miner, who had read the report and been interested in it, decided to try out ChatGPT on the same subject. He wrote on his blog that “relying on GPT would plainly be malpractice, and I am not anxious that that will change any time soon.” There’s a good chance that my employment won’t require me to get an LLM anytime soon, but I feel extremely secure in it nonetheless. And there’s a long way to go before we can even start to think about artificial intelligence replacing lawyers in court.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to introduce numerous biases into the judicial system. If Browder’s predictions come true, his AI will eventually replace attorneys, particularly in lower courts. He was confident that “a lot of lawyers are charging way too much money to copy and paste documents” and that their profession would eventually see widespread change.
