Derek Carr Officially Cut by Raiders, Becomes Free Agent

The Raiders have officially cut Derek Carr. He informed the team earlier this week that he would not accept a trade, forcing the Raiders to cut him and make him a free agent. If the team would have kept Carr, they would have owed him $40.4 million in guaranteed money.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.

Carr was benched near the end of the 2022-2023 season as it became clear the Raiders were not playoff-bound. This is because if he were to be injured and fail to pass a physical, that same $40 million would have become guaranteed money.

The Saints, Panthers, Jets and others have all been named as teams of interest regarding Carr. His refusal to be traded (due to a no trade clause on his contract) actually helps those teams, as no draft picks will have to be relinquished in order to obtain his services.
