Masterton District Council is the latest in a long list of councils raising waste disposal fees and citing the cost of carbon.
The council says its carbon fees have more than doubled between 2020 and 2022, with the cost being passed on to users from the start of February – from $220 to $246 (plus GST) per tonne of waste, reflecting the cost increase driven by the Emissions Trading Scheme.
